NORD Inverter Error Codes
The error (E), warning (C) and switch-on inhibit (I) codes of NORD DRIVESYSTEMS NORDAC inverters, led by the SK 200E series with the SK 500E, SK 180E, SK 500P and SK 300P where NORD prints the same code: what each one means, the likely causes, the first checks, and how to log it so it stops coming back.
How errors show
SK 200E (NORDAC FLEX): the device state LED is visible from outside. Depending on the device it is one dual colour LED (DS, Device State) or two single colour LEDs (DS and DE, Device Error). Green means ready and mains voltage present; during operation a faster green flash shows the degree of overload.
Red means an error is pending, and the LED flashes once per error group number, for example 3 flashes for E003.
The DS LED also flashes green at 0.5 Hz when ready but not enabled, green at 4 Hz in switch-on inhibit, red and green alternately at 4 Hz for a warning (on sizes 1 to 3 at 1 Hz for a charging error), and shows green on with red flashing when the inverter is not ready because the STO voltage on DIN4 is missing.
The red BUS-E LED flashes at 4 Hz for a system bus monitoring error (P120 or P513, E10.0 / E10.9) and at 1 Hz for an external bus module error (time-out E10.2, module error E10.3). The SimpleBox shows an error as E plus the group number, for example E003. The exact message, group plus detail number such as 3.2, is in parameter P700 [-01]; this list writes it as E003.2.
Warnings show as C plus the number (Cxxx), cannot be acknowledged and disappear by themselves when the cause is gone or when the inverter goes into the error state; the current warning is in P700 [-02] and the last warning since power on in P766.
The reason for a switch-on inhibit ('Not ready', the I codes) is in P700 [-03] and can only be shown with the ParameterBox or the NORD CON software, not with the SimpleBox. The ParameterBox shows all messages in plain text. Fault memory: P701 keeps the last 5 faults.
P702 to P706 store the output frequency, output current, output voltage, DC link voltage and active parameter set at each of those faults, and P799 the operating hours. On a SimpleBox or ControlBox, select memory slot 1 to 5 and confirm with OK or ENTER to read it. Over a fieldbus P700 is sent as an integer that must be divided by 10 (20 means 2.0).
To acknowledge: when the cause is gone the SimpleBox error display flashes and the Enter key acknowledges it.
NORD also allows switching the mains off and on, a digital input programmed for acknowledgement (P420), removing the enable (if no input is programmed for acknowledgement), bus acknowledgement, or automatic acknowledgement P506, which acts 3 s after the fault can be acknowledged.
NORD warns never to set P506 = 6 together with P428 = 1, because after a fault such as an earth fault or short circuit the device would keep switching on again. SK 500E and SK 180E use the same scheme on the SimpleBox or ControlBox (codes in a table by group with details in P700 [-01] / P701).
On SK 500P the plug-on ControlBox SK TU5-CTR shows the detail directly (for example E001.1), the SimpleControlBox shows E001 and the ParameterBox the text; its DEV LED flashes red once per error group.
Before starting, check by measurement that all contacts of the power plug connectors or connection terminals are voltage free. A status LED that is not lit does not prove the device is disconnected and voltage free.
Always disconnect all poles of cable connections, and never unplug the device or power plug connectors while voltage is applied, because arcing can cause injury and damage. All work must be done by qualified personnel, and installation and commissioning by a qualified electrician.
The heat sink and other metal parts can exceed 70 °C. Depending on settings, the device and motor can start automatically when the mains is switched on or a fault is acknowledged (for example with automatic starting P428 or automatic acknowledgement P506), so clear and secure the danger area first.
After a circuit breaker trips, visually check all live components in that circuit for defects and flashover tracks and check the terminals before resetting it. Sources: BU0200 chapter 1 safety information and warning labels (pages 20 to 25), P506 notice (page 198), I000.5 notice (page 251).
The same 5 minute rule is printed in BU 0500 (page 25), BU 0180 (page 17), BU 0600 (page 20) and BU 0800 (page 18). Automatic starting warning on acknowledgement in BU 0600 (page 210). Follow lockout/tagout and your site's safe-work procedures, and check the manual for your exact model before you act.
Quick lookup
Errors switch the inverter off and stop the machine, so in OEE they are availability losses; warnings and switch-on inhibits block the next start.
Type a code or a word (overcurrent, overtemperature, mains, brake) to filter the list. Click a code for its causes and first checks. On the SK 200E the LED and the SimpleBox show the group (E003); the full code with its detail (E003.2) is in parameter P700. Each code's details name the NORD series that print it.

Log it, or the same alarm comes back
An E error switches the inverter off and stops the motor, so in OEE terms it is a breakdown. Log the code, the machine and the minutes lost; C warnings and I switch-on inhibits that keep a line from starting count as lost time too.
- Reason code: the code plus the drive, for example NORD SK 200E E003.0 overcurrent, infeed conveyor, so an overcurrent that comes back after every product change shows up as a pattern.
- Loss bucket: a stop that needs a reset, a part or a technician is an availability loss (breakdown). Stops shorter than your micro-stop threshold go to performance (minor stops). The six big losses page shows where each one belongs.
- What to count: how often each code fires per week and the minutes it costs. Two numbers a week turn "that alarm comes up sometimes" into a ranked list. The MTBF and MTTR calculator and the downtime cost calculator do the math.
The free OEE tracker logs each stop with its reason and turns the week into a downtime Pareto, so the code that costs the most rises to the top.
fabrico.io has a guide to VFD fault codes. A code tells you what the inverter measured, not what happened at the machine in the seconds before. Fabrico's camera-based OEE software syncs line camera video with machine data, so you can replay the moment the line stopped next to the trip.
Frequently asked questions
What does error E003 mean on a NORD SK 200E inverter?
E003 is the overcurrent group, and the status LED flashes red 3 times for it. P700 [-01] shows which one: 3.0 Overcurrent I²t lim. (inverter current limit exceeded, for example more than 1.5 times rated current for 60 s), 3.1 brake chopper I²t limit, 3.2 Overcurrent IGBT (220 %), 3.3 Overcurrent IGBTfast (230 %), 3.4 brake chopper current too high, or 3.7 Power limit input (150 % input overload within 60 s). NORD's first steps: reduce the motor load, check the machine for blockage or overload, check the encoder settings and the braking resistor values (P554 to P557), and on fan drives enable flying start (P520).
How do I reset a fault on a NORD SK 200E or SK 500E?
Fix the cause first. When the cause is gone the SimpleBox or ControlBox error display flashes, and the Enter key acknowledges it. NORD also allows switching the mains off and on, a digital input programmed for acknowledgement (P420), removing the enable signal if no input is programmed for acknowledgement, a bus acknowledgement, or automatic acknowledgement with P506. Warnings (C codes) cannot be acknowledged; they clear by themselves. NORD warns that the drive may start when a fault is acknowledged, and that P506 = 6 must never be combined with P428 = 1.
What is the difference between E, C and I codes on a NORD inverter?
E codes are errors: the inverter switches off to protect itself and the error has to be acknowledged. C codes are warnings: a limit has been reached but the inverter keeps running; they cannot be acknowledged and disappear when the cause is gone. I codes give the reason the inverter is in switch-on inhibit or 'Not ready', for example I000.1 when the voltage disable input is low or I000.5 when the enable was already on at power up. Errors are in P700 [-01], warnings in P700 [-02] and inhibit reasons in P700 [-03]. I codes can only be read with a ParameterBox or NORD CON, not with the SimpleBox.
How do I read the fault history on a NORD SK 200E?
Parameter P701 stores the last 5 faults in arrays [-01] to [-05]. For each one, P702 stores the output frequency, P703 the output current, P704 the output voltage, P705 the DC link voltage and P706 the active parameter set at the moment of the fault, and P799 the operating hours. On a SimpleBox or ControlBox select memory slot 1 to 5 and confirm with OK or ENTER to read the saved value. A ParameterBox shows the messages in plain text.
What does the red flashing LED on a NORD SK 200E mean?
Red on the DS (device state) LED means an error is pending, and the number of flashes matches the error group, for example 3 flashes for E003. Red and green alternating at 4 Hz is a warning, and on sizes 1 to 3 alternating at 1 Hz is a charging error. Green on with red flashing means the inverter is not ready because the STO voltage on DIN4 is missing. Green flashing at 0.5 Hz means ready but not enabled, and at 4 Hz switch-on inhibit. A red BUS-E LED points to a system bus problem (E10.x).
Why does my NORD inverter not start even though the enable signal is on?
NORD lists these causes: the enable was already present before the device was ready, so it waits for a new 0 to 1 edge (I000.5 Enable at start; remove and reapply the enable, or set P428 so the device reacts to the level, which NORD warns can start the drive on its own); the voltage disable or quick stop input is low (I000.1, I000.2); control word bit 1 or 2 is low under bus control (I000.3, I000.4); right and left enable are present at the same time; the control word source is wrong (check P509); or a direction is blocked (I000.8, I000.9, P540). If the motor still does not turn with enable present, NORD points to unconnected motor cables, a brake that does not release, a missing setpoint or a wrong setpoint source (P510).

See the moment the drive tripped
Fabrico, a light MES with computer vision, syncs camera footage with machine and timeline data, so you can replay the exact moment the line stopped and review the cause next to the drive's fault. Cameras also catch short stops and a line that is switched on but not producing, the losses nobody writes down. Machines connect through a PLC, a Fabrico IoT device or an AI camera.
