Baldor VFD Fault Codes
The fault messages of Baldor Series H drives, the 15H inverter control and the 18H flux vector control (with the 15V and 23H where Baldor prints the same message), as the keypad shows them: what each one means, the likely causes, the first checks, and how to log it so it stops coming back. Baldor's VS1 manuals are not on a Baldor or ABB site, so the VS1 is not covered.
How faults show
Series H controls (Baldor names 15H, 17H, 18H, 19H, 20H, 21H and 22H) all use the same keypad and display. The keypad has a backlit 2 line by 16 character LCD. When a fault occurs, motor operation stops and the fault message (for example HW Desaturation on a 15H or DC Bus High on an 18H) is shown on the keypad display.
The control keeps a log of the last 31 faults with the time each one occurred; when more occur, the oldest is deleted. To read the log: from display mode press DISP to scroll to the Fault Log entry point (5 presses on the 18H), press ENTER to show the first fault type and time, and use the arrow key to scroll through the messages.
To clear the log: at the Fault Log entry point press ENTER, then SHIFT, RESET, SHIFT and ENTER. Diagnostic Info (press DISP to the diagnostic block, then ENTER) shows control temperature, bus voltage, % overload current remaining, the opto input and output states, running time, the power base ID and the installed expansion boards, which helps with overload, temperature and base ID faults.
To reset: fix the cause, then press RESET on the keypad (in local mode). In Standard Run 3 Wire mode, closing J4-15 (15H) or J1-15 (18H) also resets a fault.
In the Level 2 Miscellaneous block, Restart Auto/Man set to Automatic with Restart Fault/Hr above zero makes the control reset itself after the Restart Delay and run again; with Restart Fault/Hr at zero the fault must be reset by hand. On the 18H, the Overload parameter can be set to Foldback (reduce current) instead of Fault (trip).
If the display is blank, adjust the contrast: press DISP, SHIFT twice, the arrow keys, then ENTER.
Do not touch any circuit board, power device or electrical connection until you have made sure power is disconnected and no high voltage is present from this equipment or equipment connected to it. Do not remove the cover for at least five (5) minutes after AC power is disconnected, to allow the capacitors to discharge.
The motor circuit may have high voltage whenever AC power is applied, even when the motor is not rotating. The unit has an automatic restart feature: if an automatic restart could injure someone, set Restart Auto/Man to Manual, and do not use motor overload relays with automatic reset. Improper operation can cause violent motion of the motor shaft and driven equipment.
Dynamic brake resistors can get hot enough to ignite combustible materials. Disconnect motor leads T1, T2 and T3 from the control before a Megger test on the motor. Most troubleshooting needs only a digital voltmeter with at least 1 megohm input impedance. Sources: MN715 (9/03) Safety Notice and precautions, PDF pages 10 and 11, and Section 5, PDF page 72.
MN718 (5/99) Safety Notice and precautions, PDF pages 10 and 11, and Section 5, PDF page 74. Follow lockout/tagout and your site's safe-work procedures, and check the manual for your exact model before you act.
Quick lookup
Faults stop the motor and the machine, so in OEE they are availability losses.
Type a message or a word (overcurrent, bus, ground, encoder) to filter the list. Click a message for its causes and first checks. The same message can mean different things on the 15H and the 18H, so each series has its own row.

Log it, or the same alarm comes back
A fault stops the motor and the control logs it, so in OEE terms it is a breakdown. Log the message, the machine and the minutes lost; the control keeps only the last 31 faults, so a written log keeps the pattern.
- Reason code: the message plus the drive, for example Baldor 18H DC Bus High, unwinder drive, so an overvoltage that comes back on every fast stop shows up as a pattern.
- Loss bucket: a stop that needs a reset, a part or a technician is an availability loss (breakdown). Stops shorter than your micro-stop threshold go to performance (minor stops). The six big losses page shows where each one belongs.
- What to count: how often each code fires per week and the minutes it costs. Two numbers a week turn "that alarm comes up sometimes" into a ranked list. The MTBF and MTTR calculator and the downtime cost calculator do the math.
The free OEE tracker logs each stop with its reason and turns the week into a downtime Pareto, so the code that costs the most rises to the top.
fabrico.io has a guide to VFD fault codes. A fault message tells you what the drive measured, not what happened at the machine in the seconds before. Fabrico's camera-based OEE software syncs line camera video with machine data, so you can replay the moment the line stopped next to the trip.
Frequently asked questions
What does HW Desaturation mean on a Baldor 15H drive?
HW Desaturation means the 15H saw a very high output current, more than 400% of its rated output current. Baldor lists Accel or Decel rates set too short, torque boost set too high, electrical noise in the logic circuits and an overloaded motor as causes. Lengthen the Accel and Decel rates, reduce torque boost, check grounding of the power wiring and shielding of the signal wiring, and verify the control and motor sizing. On size B2 controls it can also point to low line impedance, a brake transistor failure or an output transistor running too hot.
How do I see and clear the fault log on a Baldor 15H or 18H?
From display mode press DISP until you reach the Fault Log entry point (5 presses on the 18H), then press ENTER to show the most recent fault and the time it occurred, and scroll with the arrow key. The control keeps the last 31 faults. To clear the log, at the Fault Log entry point press ENTER, SHIFT, RESET, SHIFT and ENTER.
How do I reset a fault on a Baldor 18H vector drive?
Fix the cause first, then press RESET on the keypad while in local mode. In Standard Run 3 Wire mode, closing input J1-15 also resets a fault. If Restart Auto/Man in the Level 2 Miscellaneous block is set to Automatic and Restart Fault/Hr is above zero, the control resets itself after the Restart Delay and will start again, so make sure an automatic restart cannot hurt anyone.
What does uP Reset mean on a Baldor drive?
It depends on the series. On a 15H, µP RESET means a software watchdog timer reset the processor because a process timed out: press RESET and call Baldor if it stays. On an 18H, µP Reset means power was applied before the DC bus had dropped to 0 VDC: press RESET, then disconnect power and wait at least 5 minutes for the bus capacitors to discharge before powering up again.
What does External Trip mean on a Baldor 15H?
The connection between J4-16 and J4-17 is open, usually because the motor thermostat opened. Check motor ventilation and the external blower, check the motor for overload, check the Volts/Hz, Base Frequency and Max Output Voltage settings, and check the thermostat wiring. If nothing is wired to J4-16, set External Trip to OFF in the Level 2 Protection block.

See the moment the drive tripped
Fabrico, a light MES with computer vision, syncs camera footage with machine and timeline data, so you can replay the exact moment the line stopped and review the cause next to the drive's fault. Cameras also catch short stops and a line that is switched on but not producing, the losses nobody writes down. Machines connect through a PLC, a Fabrico IoT device or an AI camera.
