SEW-Eurodrive Fault Codes
The fault codes of SEW-Eurodrive MOVITRAC B and MOVIDRIVE B inverters, with MOVIMOT where it uses the same number: what each one means, how the drive responds, the likely causes, the first checks with the parameters to look at, and how to log it so it stops coming back.
How faults show
MOVIDRIVE B (MDX60B/61B): the 7-segment display on the front shows the unit status as one character (for example 0 = 24 V operation, 1 = controller inhibit, 2 = no enable, 4 = enabled).
When the drive trips it shows a flashing F, then the fault number digit by digit (hundreds, tens, ones, about 1 second each with a short blank in between), and goes back to the status display after a reset.
The DBG60B keypad shows ERROR, the number and its text, for example ERROR 9 STARTUP. The subfault code, which narrows the cause, is only shown on the DBG60B or in MOVITOOLS MotionStudio.
The fault memory P080 keeps the last 5 faults (t-0 to t-4) together with the I/O status, inverter state, heat sink temperature, speed, output current, active current, unit utilization, DC link voltage, ON hours, enable hours, parameter set and motor utilization.
To reset: switch the supply off and on (keep line contactor K11 off for at least 10 s), use a digital input assigned to reset, set P840 Manual reset = YES in MotionStudio, reset from the DBG60B, or let auto reset try up to 5 resets. MOVITRAC B: the status LED on the basic unit gives a flash code (constant red = system error such as F10, F17 to F24, F25, F37, F38, F45, F94.
Slow red flashing = F04, F06, F07. Rapid red flashing = overload F01, F03, F11, F44, F84; 2x red flashing = monitoring F08, F26, F34, F81, F82; 3x red flashing = motor protection F31, F84. Green and yellow flashing = timeout F43, F47. Red and yellow flashing = copy fault F97). With the FBG11B keypad the display flashes the fault code, for example F-11.
The DBG60B shows ERROR plus number and text. MOVITRAC B stores the fault in P080 and saves no new fault until the current one is acknowledged, so after a double fault (for example F07 followed by F34) P080 and the panel can show different numbers.
To reset: the digital input assigned to fault reset (DI00 from the factory), the STOP/RESET key on the keypad (then press RUN to enable again), or P840 Manual reset = Yes in MotionStudio. MOVIMOT MM..D: the 3-color status LED flashes red in a pattern (for example 2x red = F07; 3x red = F01 or F11; 4x red = F84; 5x red = F04 or F89; 6x red = F06, F81 or F82).
Reset by switching off the 24 V supply or with an error reset.
Dark LEDs or a blank display do not prove the unit is voltage free (MOVIDRIVE B size 7 has an extra LED that lights while DC link voltage is present, but still measure).
Removing the cause of a fault or resetting it can restart the drive on its own, so disconnect the supply before troubleshooting where a restart is a hazard, and do not use auto reset on drives where an automatic restart can injure people. If the load can drive the motor as a generator, secure the output shaft against turning before opening the connection box.

Each code: causes and first checks
F01: Overcurrent
Hits OEE: AvailabilityWhat it means: Output current went above the inverter's limit, so the output stage switched off at once.[1][2][3][4]
Also on: MOVIDRIVE B, MOVITRAC B and MOVIMOT MM..D (as Overcurrent in output stage, status LED 3x red)
Drive response: MOVIDRIVE B: Immediate stop. MOVITRAC B: Immediate switch-off with interlocking.
Likely causes
- Short circuit at the inverter output, in the motor cable or in the motor
- Output contactor switched while the output stage was active
- Motor too large for the inverter
- Defective output stage or phase module
- MOVIDRIVE B: ramp limit switched off and ramp time set too short
- MOVIDRIVE B: unstable 24 V supply, or broken or shorted signal lines from the phase modules
First checks, in this order
- Disconnect power, wait 10 minutes, then check the motor cable and motor winding for short circuits.
- Only switch an output contactor while the output stage is inhibited.
- Compare the motor rating with the inverter rating and use a smaller motor if it is oversized.
- MOVIDRIVE B: activate P138 (ramp limit) and/or lengthen the ramp time.
- MOVIDRIVE B: read the subfault code on the DBG60B or in MotionStudio; it tells you whether the hardware current limit or a specific phase (U, V, W) tripped.
- If the fault will not reset, the output stage may be defective: contact SEW Service.
F03: Ground fault
Hits OEE: AvailabilityWhat it means: The inverter detected current flowing to ground in the motor, the motor cable or the inverter itself.[1][2][3]
Also on: MOVIDRIVE B and MOVITRAC B
Drive response: MOVIDRIVE B: Immediate stop. MOVITRAC B: Immediate switch-off with interlocking.
Likely causes
- Ground fault in the motor lead
- Ground fault in the motor winding
- Ground fault inside the inverter
- MOVITRAC B: an overcurrent condition as for F01
First checks, in this order
- Disconnect power, wait 10 minutes, disconnect the motor cable and test the insulation of the cable and the motor.
- Repair the cable or replace the motor if the ground fault is there.
- If cable and motor test good, the fault may be inside the inverter: replace the MOVITRAC B, or consult SEW Service for a MOVIDRIVE B.
- On MOVITRAC B, also work through the F01 checks.
F04: Brake chopper
Hits OEE: AvailabilityWhat it means: The brake chopper and braking resistor could not get rid of the energy the motor fed back while braking, or the chopper circuit has failed.[1][2][3][4]
Also on: MOVIDRIVE B, MOVITRAC B and MOVIMOT MM..D (overcurrent in the brake output, damaged resistor or shorted brake coil; status LED 5x red)
Drive response: MOVIDRIVE B: Immediate stop. MOVITRAC B: Immediate switch-off with interlocking.
Likely causes
- Too much regenerative energy, usually from decelerating a heavy load too fast
- Braking resistor circuit open (broken cable or resistor)
- Short circuit in the braking resistor circuit
- Braking resistance too high for the drive
- Brake chopper defective
- MOVITRAC B: ground fault
First checks, in this order
- Lengthen the deceleration ramps.
- Check the supply cable to the braking resistor and look for a short circuit.
- Check the braking resistor's technical data against what the drive needs.
- Check for a ground fault.
- If the chopper is defective, replace the MOVITRAC B or install a new MOVIDRIVE B.
F06: Line phase failure
Hits OEE: AvailabilityWhat it means: The inverter saw a missing supply phase or a poor supply: the DC link voltage keeps dipping, or line voltage or frequency is out of range.[1][2][3][4]
Also on: MOVIDRIVE B (Line phase failure), MOVITRAC B (Supply system phase failure, 3-phase units only) and MOVIMOT MM..D (Phase failure, detected only under load, status LED 6x red)

First checks, in this order
- Measure all three phases at the inverter input.
- Check the supply fuses and the line contactor.
- Check the supply cable and its terminals.
- Check how the supply system is configured.
- MOVITRAC B: this check only runs on 3-phase units.
F07: DC link overvoltage
Hits OEE: AvailabilityWhat it means: The DC link voltage went too high, usually because energy fed back while braking could not be dumped.[1][2][3][4]
Also on: MOVIDRIVE B, MOVITRAC B and MOVIMOT MM..D (DC link voltage too high, status LED 2x red)

First checks, in this order
- Reduce the load and check that the machine turns freely.
- Check the current limit setting and lengthen the ramps.
- Speed monitoring is set in P500/P502 and its delay time in P501/P503; a longer delay can help, but on hoists too long a delay can let the load sag.
- Check the line phases, then the motor cable and motor.
- MOVIDRIVE B with encoder: check the encoder connection and its voltage supply; if the direction is wrong, swap the A/A and B/B pairs.
- Reduce the maximum speed if it is above the operating mode's limit.

Log it, or the same alarm comes back
A fault stops the inverter and with it the conveyor, hoist or axis it drives, so in OEE terms it is a breakdown. Log the code, the drive and the minutes lost, and the subfault number when the drive shows one.
- Reason code: the code plus the drive, for example MOVITRAC B F07, sorter conveyor 4, so a DC link overvoltage that trips on every fast stop shows up as a pattern.
- Loss bucket: a stop that needs a reset, a part or a technician is an availability loss (breakdown). Stops shorter than your micro-stop threshold go to performance (minor stops). The six big losses page shows where each one belongs.
- What to count: how often each code fires per week and the minutes it costs. Two numbers a week turn "that alarm comes up sometimes" into a ranked list. The MTBF and MTTR calculator and the downtime cost calculator do the math.
The free OEE tracker logs each stop with its reason and turns the week into a downtime Pareto, so the code that costs the most rises to the top.
For drive faults across brands, fabrico.io has a VFD fault codes guide. A fault code tells you what the drive measured, not what happened at the machine in the seconds before. Fabrico's camera-based OEE software syncs line camera video with machine data, so you can replay the moment the line stopped next to the trip.
Frequently asked questions
What does F08 mean on a SEW-Eurodrive inverter?
F08 is Speed monitoring. The motor did not follow the speed setpoint: the speed or current controller ran at its limit for longer than the monitoring delay, or a maximum speed or frequency was exceeded. Typical causes are a mechanical overload or jam, a missing supply or motor phase, or on a MOVIDRIVE B with encoder, an encoder wired wrongly or counting the wrong way. Reduce the load, check the line phases and motor cable, lengthen the ramps, and check the encoder. Speed monitoring is set in P500/P502 and its delay in P501/P503; on hoists, keep the delay short so the load cannot sag. MOVIDRIVE B and MOVITRAC B both trip immediately on F08.
What does F01 overcurrent mean on a MOVITRAC B or MOVIDRIVE B?
F01 means output current went above the inverter limit and the output stage switched off at once. Check for a short circuit at the output, in the motor cable or in the motor (power off and wait 10 minutes first), make sure an output contactor only switches while the output stage is inhibited, and check that the motor is not too large for the inverter. On a MOVIDRIVE B, also check that P138 (ramp limit) is active and the ramps are not too short, and read the subfault code to see which phase tripped. If F01 will not reset, the output stage may be defective: contact SEW Service.
What is the F14 encoder fault on a MOVIDRIVE B (MDX61B)?
F14 Encoder means the MOVIDRIVE B lost a valid encoder signal. The usual cause is the encoder cable: shield not connected, a short circuit or a broken wire. Other causes are a defective encoder or encoder card, an unknown encoder type at X14 or X15, or an encoder running above 6542 min-1. Read the subfault on the DBG60B or in MotionStudio, check the cable and plug at X15 (motor encoder) or X14 (external encoder), and replace the encoder if the wiring is good. If two inverters are linked through X14, check P505. MOVITRAC B does not use F14 as a main code; encoder problems there show as subfault 14 of F116.
How do I reset a fault on a MOVITRAC B?
Fix the cause first. Then reset with the digital input assigned to fault reset (DI00 from the factory), with the STOP/RESET key on the keypad, or by setting P840 Manual reset = Yes in MOVITOOLS MotionStudio. After a keypad reset the drive stays inhibited until you press RUN. RS485 and system bus timeouts (F43, F47) clear by themselves once communication is back. Remember that a reset can restart the machine, so make it safe first.
Where do I find the SEW-Eurodrive fault list and the fault history?
The full MOVITRAC B list (F00 to F113, plus F116) is in the MOVITRAC B Operating Instructions, chapter List of faults, and the MOVIDRIVE MDX60B/61B list is in the operating instructions chapter Fault list; both are free on the SEW-Eurodrive download site. On the drive, parameter P080 holds the fault memory: MOVIDRIVE B keeps the last 5 faults (t-0 to t-4) with speed, current, DC link voltage and other data at the moment of the trip, while MOVITRAC B keeps the latest fault and stores no new one until it is acknowledged. MOVIDRIVE B subfault codes are shown only on the DBG60B keypad or in MotionStudio.

See the moment the drive tripped
Fabrico, a light MES with computer vision, syncs camera footage with machine and timeline data, so you can replay the exact moment the line stopped and review the cause next to the drive's fault. Cameras also catch short stops and a line that is switched on but not producing, the losses nobody writes down. Machines connect through a PLC, a Fabrico IoT device or an AI camera.
