Miller Welder Error Codes
Every welder fault stops the weld cell, and in OEE it is lost availability. These are the HELP, HLP, Err and display messages of Miller welders (Multimatic, Millermatic, Dynasty, Maxstar, Syncrowave, XMT, Invision, Deltaweld and Continuum): what each one means, the likely causes, the first checks, and how to log it so it stops coming back.
How errors show
Miller units show problems in different ways by family. XMT 350 and Invision 352 MPa show HELP and a number on the meters (HELP 1 to HELP 25). Deltaweld 350 and 500 without meters blink the front panel fault light the code number of times, then pause 2 seconds and repeat.
With the optional meters the left display shows HELP and the right display toggles between a word (IN, TEMP, LINE, OUT, LINK, DUTY) and HELP plus the code and a two digit service number. Millermatic 350P shows HELP 0 to HELP 11 or TIP SAVE on the A and V displays (overheating flashes OVER TEMP and HELP 0 or HELP 2).
Millermatic 252 shows HLP on the voltmeter and the number on the wire feed speed meter. Continuum and Auto-Continuum feeders show a short message on the red LED display (ERR, WRN or BOOT plus a word) with the message type and details on the LCD: ERROR must be fixed before welding, WARNING should be addressed, MESSAGE asks for an action such as cycling power.
The Logs soft key opens the error log. Dynasty 280, Maxstar 210 and 280 and Syncrowave 300 and 400 spell messages across the two 4 character meters (for example [OVER] [TEMP] or [SEE] [O.M.]); for latching errors the Standby LED flashes and the error clears with the Standby button or by turning power off. Syncrowave 210 scrolls messages in 2 second segments.
Multimatic 200, 215, 220 AC/DC, 235 and 255 and Millermatic 255 print text messages on the LCD (for example Shorted output-First remove short, then pull trigger to clear error), and their setup menu has an Error Logs screen. Millermatic 211 uses the Over Temperature light: steady means overheating, blinking 1 to 6 times means a specific error.
Millermatic 211 PRO and Multimatic 215 PRO show ERROR (machine fault) or ALERT (operator action) with a four character diagnostic help code such as GP00 or WG01.
On Deltaweld units measure the capacitor voltage across the relink board screw terminals until it drops to near zero, and if it has not dropped after six minutes use a bleeder resistor as instructed. Hot parts can burn. Have only qualified persons remove doors, panels or covers.

Quick lookup
Errors stop the welder and the cell it serves, so in OEE they are availability losses; warnings are early signs.
Type a code or a word (help, thermal, trigger, voltage) to filter the list. Click a code for its causes and first checks. One HELP number can mean different things on different machines, so those codes have one row per machine family, named in brackets.

Log it, or the same alarm comes back
An error stops the welder, and the cell waits until it is cleared, so in OEE terms it is a breakdown. Log the code, the machine and the minutes lost, every time, even when a power cycle clears it in seconds.
- Reason code: the code plus the cell, for example Miller Millermatic 350P HELP 4, cell 2, so a trigger fault that comes back every shift shows up as a pattern.
- Loss bucket: a stop that needs a reset, a part or a technician is an availability loss (breakdown). Stops shorter than your micro-stop threshold go to performance (minor stops). The six big losses page shows where each one belongs.
- What to count: how often each code fires per week and the minutes it costs. Two numbers a week turn "that alarm comes up sometimes" into a ranked list. The MTBF and MTTR calculator and the downtime cost calculator do the math.
The free OEE tracker logs each stop with its reason and turns the week into a downtime Pareto, so the code that costs the most rises to the top.
fabrico.io has a MIG welder troubleshooting guide. An error code tells you what the power source detected, not what happened in the cell in the seconds before. Fabrico's camera-based OEE software syncs camera video with machine data, so you can replay the moment the cell stopped next to the code.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I find a Miller welder error codes PDF?
Miller prints the codes in the troubleshooting or maintenance section of each machine's owner's manual, which you can download free through the Owner's Manual lookup on millerwelds.com by model or serial number. Look for Help Displays (XMT, Invision, Millermatic 350P), Help Codes (Millermatic 252), Fault Code Diagnostics (Deltaweld), Voltmeter/Ammeter Display Messages (Dynasty, Maxstar, Syncrowave), Error Messages (Multimatic, Millermatic 255 and the PRO models) or Error Code Troubleshooting (Continuum). The same HELP number can mean different things on different families, so always read the table for your model.
What do the Miller Multimatic 215 error codes mean?
The original Multimatic 215 shows text messages rather than numbers. The common ones: Overtemp (let it cool), Shorted trigger (release the 4-pin or 8-pin trigger; if it returns, the gun is damaged), Shorted output (remove the short and pull the trigger or wait 30 seconds), Stuck electrode (free the rod or tungsten), Motor error (too much drive roll pressure, blocked liner or tip, tangled wire), Over voltage above 310 V or Under voltage below 90 V (cycle power), and Cable error (wire feed housing cable on the wrong stud for the process). The Multimatic 215 PRO uses ERROR and ALERT codes instead, such as GP00 MIG gas not detected or WG01 MIG motor fault.
What do the Miller Multimatic 255 error codes mean?
The Multimatic 255 shows text messages on its LCD. Trigger error and Foot Pedal Error mean a trigger or pedal is held when it should not be; Shorted output means the wire or tip touched the work; Internal/Remote Motor Error and Tach Error point to drive roll pressure, a blocked liner or tip or tangled wire; Thermal error names a thermistor that is shorted or open; Primary Error, Over voltage (above 690 V as printed) and Under voltage (below 150 V) are input side problems cleared by cycling power; Network error, Transformer Saturation error and Gun Error complete the list. The Millermatic 255 uses the same messages, with 288 V as its over voltage limit.
What do HELP 3, HELP 5 and HELP 25 mean on a Miller welder?
On XMT 350, Invision 352 MPa and Deltaweld units, HELP 3 means the left side overheated and HELP 5 the right side; HELP 25 means the duty cycle limit was reached. In all three cases leave the machine switched on so the fan can cool it, and it carries on by itself. HELP 1, 2 and 8 are internal circuit faults for a service agent. On the Millermatic 350P the numbers differ: HELP 0 and HELP 2 are the overheating codes, and HELP 3 means the trigger was held at power up or there was no open circuit voltage.
What does SEE O.M. or ERR LOG mean on a Miller Dynasty or Syncrowave?
On the Dynasty 280, Maxstar 210 and 280 and Syncrowave 300 and 400, [SEE] [O.M.] is a latching error that sends you to the owner's manual troubleshooting table, which says to contact a Miller Factory Authorized Service Agent; press Standby or turn power off to clear it first. ERR LOG means an error has been stored in the machine's error log (the technician menu keeps the last eight error events) and a service agent should read the code. Other latching messages are [CHEK] [INPT] for high or low input voltage, [WELD] [CABL] for weld cable problems and [COOL] [PWR] for cooler power.
What does HLP 4 or HELP 5 mean on a Millermatic?
On the Millermatic 252 and 350P, HELP 4 (shown as HLP 4 on the 252) means the gun trigger was held 2 minutes without an arc, or the tip or wire is shorted to the work: release the trigger and clear the short. HELP 5 means a wire feed problem or drive motor overcurrent: check the spool brake, clear the wire path and clean or replace the liner, guides and contact tip. HELP 6 is the same for a spool gun or push-pull gun motor. On the 252, HLP 7 to HLP 10 and HLP 12 are 2 minute trigger timeouts for specific guns.
