Fronius TPS Error Codes
The service codes of Fronius TransPuls Synergic welding power sources (TPS 2700, TPS 3200, 4000 and 5000, TransSynergic 4000/5000, TIME 5000 Digital and CMT 4000 Advanced) and the TPS/i error numbers Fronius names for robot interfaces: what each one means, the likely causes, the first checks, and how to log it so it stops coming back.
How errors show
On the TPS 2700, TPS 3200/4000/5000 and TransSynergic 4000/5000 the control panel shows a service code split across its two digital displays, for example Err | 051 or tP1 | xxx, where xxx is a temperature value.
The error indicator lights up and the same message appears on every LocalNet device with a digital display, and a separate overtemperature indicator lights when the machine overheats.
Depending on the code it clears by itself (Err | 054, hot | H2O, overtemperature codes after cooling), is acknowledged with the Store button or the Feeder inching button, or needs the power source switched off and back on.
On the TPS/i, malfunctions, warnings and status codes appear on the display as plain text dialogues and are stored in the logbook (Defaults / Documentation / Logbook), the SmartManager website shows a red error line with the error number, and a robot or PLC receives them as the Error number and Warning number signals.
A TPS/i error is reset with the Error reset signal, or via the torch trigger, display or interface, after the cause has been fixed.
The housing screws are the ground conductor connection for the housing, so never replace them with screws that lack a reliable ground conductor connection.
Fronius states that this work must only be done by technically trained and qualified personnel, and that any service code not described in the manual can only be fixed by a service technician: note the message, serial number and configuration and contact Fronius After-Sales Service.
Follow lockout/tagout and your site's safe-work procedures, and check the manual for your exact model before you act.
Quick lookup
Service codes and errors stop the weld and the cell, so in OEE they are availability losses; a weld cut short also costs quality.
Type a code or a word (mains, gas, overtemperature, wire) to filter the list. Click a code for its causes and first checks. Model TPS means the TPS 2700 to 5000 family, TPS/i the TPS 320i to 600i; TPS/i Limit Monitoring numbers 50 and 51 are not the same as Err | 050 and Err | 051 on the TPS.

1334: Short circuit between contact tip and welding ground during active WireSense/teach process
Hits OEE: AvailabilityWhat it means: During a WireSense or teach movement the torch was moved so far toward the workpiece that the contact tip made an electrical connection to it.[4]
Device response: The wire is retracted 40 mm and the error message is set.
Likely causes
- Torch moved too close to the workpiece during WireSense or teach
- Movement outside the WireSense length limits
First checks, in this order
- Move the torch back so the contact tip stays clear of the workpiece.
- Check the robot path against the WireSense measuring range and length limits.
1340: Maximum number of movement cycles on isolating materials achieved
Hits OEE: AvailabilityWhat it means: In WireSense Isolated mode more than 30 continuous movement cycles were made on non-conductive material, for example slag, silicate or oxide on the seam. At a slow search speed of 30 cm/min this is a silicate width of about 5 mm.[4]
Device response: The process stops automatically.
Likely causes
- Searching across slag, silicate or oxide deposits
- WireSense started on a non-conductive section
- Unstable wire feed in Isolated mode (see warning 16680), which can trigger 1340 incorrectly
First checks, in this order
- Start the WireSense process on a conductive section.
- Remove slag from the component or seam; the Slaghammer function only removes silicate on the wire tip.
- Check the logbook for warning 16680 before this error.
16680: Increased motor force / unstable wirefeed process detected during isolated mode
Warning: act before it becomes a stopWhat it means: In WireSense Isolated mode the welding machine saw unusual motor forces or wire speed profile, so the WireSense process is no longer running properly. If operation continues, error 1340 may be triggered incorrectly.[4]
Device response: Warning only; the running process is not aborted.
Likely causes
- Special torch types, for example very long or special torch geometries
- Special filler metals, for example CuMn13Al8
- Unsuitable inner liner or inner liner not matched to the wire diameter
- Uncommon wire diameters, for example 0.8 mm or 1.6 mm
First checks, in this order
- Check that the inner liner suits the wire diameter.
- Check the torch and filler metal against the cases Fronius lists.
- Clarify with Fronius Technical Support whether another system setup is possible or whether WireSense Isolated mode can be used.

Likely causes
- Actual voltage outside the limits defined in the job
- Limits set from set values instead of measured actual values
- Job parameters changed without adjusting the limits

Log it, or the same alarm comes back
A power source error stops the weld, and in a robot cell it stops the cell, so in OEE terms it is a breakdown. Log the code, the cell and the minutes lost, and the parts scrapped by a weld cut short, which count against quality.
- Reason code: the code plus the cell, for example Fronius tP1 overtemperature, weld cell 2, so a power source that overheats every afternoon shift shows up as a pattern.
- Loss bucket: a stop that needs a reset, a part or a technician is an availability loss (breakdown). Stops shorter than your micro-stop threshold go to performance (minor stops). The six big losses page shows where each one belongs.
- What to count: how often each code fires per week and the minutes it costs. Two numbers a week turn "that alarm comes up sometimes" into a ranked list. The MTBF and MTTR calculator and the downtime cost calculator do the math.
The free OEE tracker logs each stop with its reason and turns the week into a downtime Pareto, so the code that costs the most rises to the top.
fabrico.io has a MIG welder troubleshooting guide. A code tells you what the device detected, not what happened at the machine in the seconds before. Fabrico's camera-based OEE software syncs camera video with machine data, so you can replay the moment the cell stopped next to the welder's code.
Frequently asked questions
What does Err | 051 mean on a Fronius TPS welder?
Err | 051 is mains undervoltage: the mains voltage has fallen below the tolerance range of the power source. Measure and check the mains voltage. Its partner Err | 052 means mains overvoltage. On the TransSteel 3500 / 5000 Syn the same conditions show as Err | 51 and Err | 52, and Fronius adds that you should contact After-Sales Service if they keep recurring.
What does no | Prg mean on a Fronius TPS 4000 or 5000?
no | Prg means no preconfigured program has been selected. Select a configured welding program and the message clears. The TransSteel 3500 / 5000 Syn uses the same code with the same meaning.
What do tP1 and tS1 mean on a Fronius TPS?
They are overtemperature codes; the number after the bar is a temperature value. tP1 to tP6 mean overtemperature in the primary circuit, tS1 to tS3 in the secondary circuit, and tSt in the control circuit. Let the power source cool down; the thermostatic safety cut-out switches it back on after the cooling phase. Fronius lists overload (duty cycle exceeded), limited cooling air (clean the rear air filter, keep the ducts free) and a faulty fan as causes.
What does -St | oP- mean on a Fronius welding machine?
-St | oP- appears when the power source runs with a robot interface or field bus and the robot is not ready. Set the Robot ready signal from the robot control, and with a ROB 5000 or a field bus coupler for robot control also send the Source error reset signal.
What does Err | IP mean on a Fronius TPS?
On the TPS 2700, TPS 3200/4000/5000 family Err | IP means primary overcurrent, and Fronius only lists one remedy: contact After-Sales Service. Note the code, serial number and configuration first. Be careful when comparing machines: the TransSteel 3500 / 5000 Syn manual uses Err | IP for primary overvoltage instead.
Where do I find the error codes on a Fronius TPS 320i, 400i, 500i or 600i?
The TPS/i shows malfunctions, warnings and status codes on its display as plain text dialogues, keeps them in the logbook under Defaults / Documentation / Logbook, and shows a red error line with the error number on the SmartManager website. A robot or PLC receives the Error number and Warning number signals. Fronius' Help Center for welding also links to its online Error code analysis tool for looking up a number.

See the moment the cell stopped
Fabrico, a light MES with computer vision, syncs camera footage with machine and timeline data, so you can replay the exact moment the cell stopped and review the cause next to the welder's code. Cameras also catch short stops and a line that is switched on but not producing, the losses nobody writes down. Machines connect through a PLC, a Fabrico IoT device or an AI camera.
