Troubleshooting / Kemppi welder errors

Kemppi Welder Error Codes

Every welder error stops the weld cell, and in OEE it is lost availability. These are the error codes of Kemppi welders (X5 FastMig, X3 FastMig, AX MIG Welder, Master M, Minarc M and Kempact RA, plus the Master S, Master T, MasterTig and Minarc T machines that share the numbers): what each one means, the likely causes, the first checks, and how to log it so it stops coming back.

How errors show

X5 FastMig, X3 FastMig, AX MIG Welder, Master M, Master S, Master T, MasterTig and Minarc M: when an error occurs the control panel shows the error number and title. The X5 Wire Feeder 300 AP/APC panel and the Master M and Minarc M panels also show the possible cause and a proposed action; the X3 panel shows the number, and Minarc T panels show Err and the number.

X8 MIG Welder: the Control Pad shows the number and title of the error, the possible reasons and the actions to fix it, and View > Error log lists the error history. The wire feeder control panel shows the number and title. The gun remote control display shows only a symbol: system warning (blinks for 10 seconds, then stays on.

Welding still enabled), WPS warning (a key parameter is outside the WPS limits and shows in red. Welding still enabled) or system error (welding disabled). Kempact RA shows Error and a number (Error 2, 3 and 4 are listed).

MinarcMig 190 AUTO and 220 AUTO have no numbered codes: a yellow overheating light comes on when the machine hits its duty cycle limit or the supply voltage is out of range, and goes out once the machine has cooled.

For most hardware codes Kemppi's action is to restart the power source or welding system and contact Kemppi service if the error comes back; for overheating codes (4, 14, 16) do not switch the machine off, let the fans cool it.

Safety first.
Kemppi: welding is hot work and the equipment contains high-voltage circuits; it is intended for professional use in an industrial environment. Only an authorized electrician may carry out electrical work, and only qualified service personnel may carry out periodic and annual maintenance. Unplug the power source from the mains before you touch electrical cables or connectors.

X8: to take the cover plate off, first unplug the power source from the mains, wait about 2 minutes, then discharge the capacitor. Kempact RA: checks on the mains power must be done by an authorised trained electrician.

Quick lookup

Errors stop the welder and the cell it serves, so in OEE they are availability losses; a warning is an early sign.

Type a code or a word (overheated, mains, gas, wire feeder) to filter the list. Click a code for its causes and first checks. One number can mean different things on different machines, so those codes have one row per machine family, named in brackets.

Log it, or the same alarm comes back

An error stops the welder, and the cell waits until it is cleared, so in OEE terms it is a breakdown. Log the code, the machine and the minutes lost, every time, even when a restart clears it in seconds.

  • Reason code: the code plus the cell, for example Kemppi X5 error 4, cell 2, so an overheating that comes back every shift shows up as a pattern.
  • Loss bucket: a stop that needs a reset, a part or a technician is an availability loss (breakdown). Stops shorter than your micro-stop threshold go to performance (minor stops). The six big losses page shows where each one belongs.
  • What to count: how often each code fires per week and the minutes it costs. Two numbers a week turn "that alarm comes up sometimes" into a ranked list. The MTBF and MTTR calculator and the downtime cost calculator do the math.

The free OEE tracker logs each stop with its reason and turns the week into a downtime Pareto, so the code that costs the most rises to the top.

fabrico.io has a MIG welder troubleshooting guide. An error code tells you what the power source detected, not what happened in the cell in the seconds before. Fabrico's camera-based OEE software syncs camera video with machine data, so you can replay the moment the cell stopped next to the code.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find the Kemppi error codes PDF?

Each Kemppi manual has an Error codes topic on userdoc.kemppi.com, and kemppi.com/en/userdoc links the HTML manual and a PDF download for each product. The X5 FastMig, Master M 353, 355 and 358 and AX MIG Welder topics list the code, title, possible cause and proposed action; the Kempact RA PDF lists its codes in section 8. This page gathers those tables in one list.

What is Kemppi error code 171?

In Kemppi's AX MIG Welder table, error 171 is Gas sensor unit not calibrated: the gas sensor unit is not calibrated or its calibration data cannot be loaded. Restart the welding system, and contact Kemppi service if the error comes back. For another machine, look the number up in that machine's own manual; an X8 MIG Welder shows the title and actions on its Control Pad.

What is Kemppi error code 54?

This page has no row for code 54, because the Kemppi tables collected here (X3, X5, AX MIG Welder, Master M, Master S, Master T, MasterTig, Minarc and Kempact RA) do not list it. On the AX MIG Welder the neighbouring codes are 53 Collision detected and 56 Wire feeder hardware fault. Read the full text on the machine (the X5 300 AP/APC panel, Master M panels and the X8 Control Pad show the title, cause and action), note the number and contact Kemppi service if it stays.

What does Kemppi error 4 mean?

On X3 and X5 FastMig, AX MIG Welder, Master M, Master S, Master T, MasterTig and Minarc machines, error 4 is Power source is overheated, usually after a long session at high power: do not switch the machine off, let the fans cool it, and call Kemppi service if the fans are not running. On a Kempact RA, Error 4 is Wire feed motor over current: check the contact tip, liner and wire feed mechanism.

How do I see the error code on a Kemppi X8 MIG Welder?

The X8 Control Pad shows the error number and title with the possible reasons and the actions to fix it, and View > Error log shows past errors. The wire feeder control panel shows the number and title. The gun remote display shows only a symbol: system warning and WPS warning still allow welding, a system error disables it, so check the Control Pad or wire feeder panel for the details.

What do Kemppi errors 2, 3 and 17 mean?

They are mains supply errors. Error 2 is Too low mains voltage and error 3 Too high mains voltage (on the Kempact RA: Mains under voltage and Mains over voltage); restart the power source, check the supply quality and call Kemppi service if it stays. Error 17 is Phase is missing from mains supply: check the mains cable and connectors and measure the voltage on every phase.

See the moment the cell stopped

Fabrico, a light MES with computer vision, syncs camera footage with machine and timeline data, so you can replay the exact moment the cell stopped and review the cause next to the welder's error. Cameras also catch short stops and a line that is switched on but not producing, the losses nobody writes down. Machines connect through a PLC, a Fabrico IoT device or an AI camera.
