Atlas Copco Elektronikon Alarm Codes
The alarms an Atlas Copco Elektronikon controller shows: the compressor shutdowns and warnings Atlas Copco explains for every Elektronikon generation, and the main motor converter fault codes from the Elektronikon Graphic (Mk5) books for VSD machines. What each one means, the likely causes, the first checks, and how to log it so it stops coming back.
How alarms show
Shutdown: the machine stops, the shutdown message shows on the display and the general alarm LED flashes. Shutdown warning: a message appears and the general alarm LED lights while the machine keeps running; the message clears once the reading is back below the warning level. Service warning: a message shows on the display and the service LED lights.
On the Elektronikon Graphic (Mk5), open Menu, then Inputs: any input in warning or shutdown shows a warning or stop icon instead of its normal icon. Move to the Stop or Protections icon and press Enter to see the active protection, for example Main motor converter alarm with its fault code. The Event history menu lists the last shutdowns and emergency stops.
On the Mk5s Touch, the warning sign flashes for a shutdown and stays lit for a warning, and the service sign lights when service is due. To reset: fix the cause first, make the machine safe for any physical check, reset at the controller (and reset a tripped device such as the main motor overload relay at the device, if your procedures allow), then restart and watch the reading.
Reset service warnings in the Service menu only after the work is done. If an alarm returns right after a reset, stop resetting and call Atlas Copco service with the message text and serial number.
On machines fed by a frequency converter, wait 10 minutes after switching off before electrical work, because the capacitors keep a dangerous voltage. Do not trust indicator lamps: check with a meter that the circuit is dead.
Automatic restart after voltage failure, week timers and remote control can start the machine without warning, even after a manual stop, so lock out the isolator and hang a do not start sign. Let the machine cool before maintenance; pipes and parts can be hotter than 70 °C (158 °F). (Atlas Copco Elektronikon alarm guide and troubleshooting guide.
GHS VSD+ instruction manual 6996022310_C, chapter 1. Start and control system instruction book 6996 0242 10, chapters 1 and 7.) Follow lockout/tagout and your site's safe-work procedures, and check the manual for your exact model before you act.
Quick lookup
Shutdowns stop the compressor and every line that runs on its air, so in OEE they are availability losses; warnings are early signs.
Type an alarm or a word (temperature, overload, voltage, service) to filter the list. Click a row for its causes and first checks. Applies to tells which machines Atlas Copco documents it for: the converter codes come from the VSD+ vacuum pump and VSD cabinet books, and Atlas Copco says message texts vary by series, controller and options.

Each code: causes and first checks
Compressor element outlet temperature high
Hits OEE: AvailabilityWhat it means: The air leaving the screw element is hotter than the programmed limit. The controller first gives a shutdown warning, and if the temperature keeps rising to the shutdown level it stops the compressor. Atlas Copco calls this one of the most common faults on rotary screw compressors.[1][2][3]
Also on: Applies to: Elektronikon (all generations), Atlas Copco air compressors.
Machine response: Shutdown warning first, then the compressor stops at the shutdown level
Likely causes
- Dirty coolers or heat exchangers
- Blocked ventilation, too little cooling air, or hot cooling air recirculating
- High ambient temperature in the compressor room
- Cooling fan not working
- Oil level too low or oil in poor condition
- Oil cooler clogged or bypass valve not working
- On water-cooled units: cooling water too warm, flow too low, or dirt and scale in the water circuit
First checks, in this order
- Clean the coolers and heat exchangers.
- Check that the cooling fan runs.
- Check the ventilation around the compressor and stop cooling air from recirculating.
- Check the oil level and oil condition.
- On water-cooled units, check water flow and temperature and clean the water circuit and coolers.

Log it, or the same alarm comes back
A shutdown stops the compressor, and when compressed air drops, every machine that needs it stops too, so in OEE terms it is a breakdown for each line it feeds. Log the alarm, the compressor and the minutes lost on the lines; shutdown warnings and service warnings are early signs worth logging.
- Reason code: the alarm plus the compressor, for example Atlas Copco GA element outlet temperature shutdown, compressor 2, so a cooler that clogs every summer shows up as a pattern.
- Loss bucket: a stop that needs a reset, a part or a technician is an availability loss (breakdown). Stops shorter than your micro-stop threshold go to performance (minor stops). The six big losses page shows where each one belongs.
- What to count: how often each code fires per week and the minutes it costs. Two numbers a week turn "that alarm comes up sometimes" into a ranked list. The MTBF and MTTR calculator and the downtime cost calculator do the math.
The free OEE tracker logs each stop with its reason and turns the week into a downtime Pareto, so the code that costs the most rises to the top.
fabrico.io has an air compressor troubleshooting guide. An alarm tells you what the controller measured, not what the lines downstream lost while the air was gone. Fabrico's camera-based OEE software syncs line camera video with machine data, so you can replay the moment a line stopped next to the cause.
Frequently asked questions
What does a shutdown warning mean on an Atlas Copco Elektronikon?
A shutdown warning level is a programmable level set just below the shutdown level. When a measurement such as element outlet temperature passes it, a message shows on the display and the general alarm LED lights, but the compressor keeps running. It is the controller telling you to fix the cause now, because if the reading keeps rising to the shutdown level the machine stops. The message clears by itself once the reading drops back.
How do I reset an alarm on an Atlas Copco compressor?
Fix the cause first. If you need to touch the machine, stop it, lock off the supply and depressurize it. Then reset the message at the Elektronikon. If a separate protection device tripped, such as the main motor overload relay, reset that device too, but only if your procedures allow it. Restart and watch the reading that caused the alarm. Reset service reminders only after the service is done. If the alarm comes back straight after a reset, stop resetting it and contact Atlas Copco service with the exact message and the serial number.
What does element outlet temperature shutdown mean?
The air and oil leaving the screw element got hotter than the shutdown limit, so the Elektronikon stopped the machine to protect it. A shutdown warning comes first at a lower level. Common causes are dirty coolers, poor ventilation or hot air recirculating, high room temperature, a fan that does not run, low or worn oil, and on water-cooled units warm or low cooling water. Clean the coolers, check the fan, oil and room ventilation, then reset. Levels depend on the machine: on Atlas Copco GHS VSD+ vacuum pumps the factory settings are 112 °C for the warning and 120 °C for the shutdown.
What do the service plan warnings A, B, C and D mean?
The Elektronikon groups service work into levels called A, B and so on. Each level has two intervals, running hours and real time hours, and the service warning comes at whichever is reached first. In the Atlas Copco example, level A is set to 4000 running hours or 8760 hours (one year). The machine keeps running. Do the service actions for the level shown (they are listed in your machine's preventive maintenance schedule), then reset that level in Menu, Service, Service plan. Next service shows what is due next, and History lists past services.
What is the main motor converter alarm on an Atlas Copco VSD compressor?
It means the frequency converter that drives the main motor has reported a fault, so the machine stops. The Elektronikon shows Main motor converter alarm together with the converter's own fault code. Open the Stop or Protections icon to read the code. Typical causes are converter overheating, supply problems such as low voltage or a lost phase, and internal converter faults. Check cooling air and the supply first, note the code, and call Atlas Copco service if it stays. The code list depends on the converter type, so look the code up in the instruction book for your machine.

See the moment the line stopped
Fabrico, a light MES with computer vision, syncs camera footage with machine and timeline data, so you can replay the exact moment the line stopped and review the cause next to the compressor alarm. Cameras also catch short stops and a line that is switched on but not producing, the losses nobody writes down. Machines connect through a PLC, a Fabrico IoT device or an AI camera.
