Problems on this page:

Vacuum not reached

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The tumbler cannot pull the set vacuum or loses it during the cycle.

Lid or door seal damaged
Replace the seal and clean the sealing face.
Vacuum pump worn
Check the pump and its oil.
Filter or liquid trap blocked
Clean the filter and empty the trap.
Leak at the rotary joint or valve
Check the joint and valves.

Prevention: Vacuum reached and time to reach it logged per batch.

Uneven marinade uptake

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Pieces in the same batch take up different amounts of marinade.

Load larger or smaller than the program is set for
Load the drum to the volume the program was set for.
Tumble time or speed wrong
Check the program.
Product temperature too high or too low
Bring the product to the process temperature.
Mixed piece sizes
Grade the product by size before tumbling.

Prevention: Uptake checked by weight on samples.

Product damaged during tumbling

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Pieces break up, shred or lose their shape.

Speed too high
Reduce the drum speed.
Tumble time too long
Shorten the program.
Paddles too aggressive for the product
Use the paddle set for the product.
Drum overloaded
Reduce the load.

Prevention: Product appearance checked after the first batch.

Product temperature rising

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Product leaves the tumbler warmer than allowed.

Cooling jacket not working
Check the cooling supply.
Room too warm
Check the room temperature.
Cycle too long without rest periods
Use rest periods in the program.
Product loaded warm
Chill the product first.

Prevention: Product temperature checked at unload.

Liquid reaching the vacuum pump

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Brine or foam is drawn into the vacuum system.

No liquid trap or trap full
Fit and empty a liquid trap.
Foaming marinade
Check the recipe and the fill level.
Vacuum applied too fast
Ramp the vacuum.
Drum overfilled with liquid
Check the liquid dosing.

Prevention: Trap emptied each batch.

Drum drive faults

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The drum stops, jerks or the drive trips.

Support rollers worn
Replace the rollers.
Drive chain or belt worn
Replace and tension.
Overload from a heavy batch
Load within the rating.
Motor or gearbox fault
Check the drive.

Prevention: Drive checks at the monthly PM.

Cleaning residue in the drum

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Swabs fail or residue is seen on paddles after cleaning.

Paddles not reachable by spray
Clean paddles by hand as the procedure states.
Cleaning chemical or temperature wrong
Check the cleaning method.
Drum not drained
Drain fully before inspection.
Seals trapping residue
Remove and clean the seals.

Prevention: Pre-start hygiene check signed.

Lid hard to open or close

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The lid sticks or the locking mechanism fails.

Vacuum not released fully
Check the vent valve.
Hinge or lock worn
Service the hinge and lock.
Seal swollen
Replace the seal.
Product on the seal face
Clean the face before closing.

Prevention: Lid mechanism on the monthly PM.

Marinade not absorbed by the end of the cycle

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Free marinade is left in the drum at unload and the product weight gain is below target.

Too much marinade for the load
Dose the marinade for the actual product weight in the drum, not for the full drum capacity.
Vacuum too weak during the cycle
Check that the drum holds the set vacuum for the whole program.
Program too short for the product size
Lengthen the program for larger pieces.
Product too cold for uptake
Bring the product to the temperature the recipe sets before tumbling.

Prevention: Free liquid at unload weighed on sample batches.

Drum not discharging cleanly

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Product stays in the drum at unload and has to be removed by hand.

Discharge rotation direction or speed wrong
Check the unload program and run the drum in the discharge direction at the set speed.
Product sticking to the paddles
Check the product temperature and the paddle surfaces for damage that holds product.
Tilt or door not opening fully
Check the tilt cylinder and door stops.
Load too large for the discharge
Reduce the batch size to what the drum discharges.

Prevention: Unload time recorded per batch.

Stop the same fault coming back

Recurring vacuum tumbler stops usually trace to a cause you cannot see by hand. The partner we recommend is Fabrico: it tracks OEE and downtime live from PLCs, IoT sensors or AI cameras; where cameras are fitted, the video of a stop sits next to its machine data so the cause can be reviewed; and a technician opens the work order from the stop in the same system. Data is hosted in the AWS EU region, and Fabrico and the company behind it hold ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO 9001.
