Problems on this page:
Trap blowing live steam
Hits OEE: PerformanceSymptoms: Steam blows through the trap continuously and steam use rises.
Prevention: Trap survey with an ultrasonic or temperature method on a fixed schedule.
Trap blocked or failed closed
Hits OEE: AvailabilitySymptoms: Condensate backs up, equipment heats slowly and water hammer may start.
Prevention: Equipment heat-up times compared with normal.
Water hammer in the steam lines
Hits OEE: AvailabilitySymptoms: Loud banging in the pipework when steam is turned on or during operation.
Prevention: Warm-up procedure written for each steam main; severe hammer is a safety risk, isolate and investigate.
Equipment heating slowly
Hits OEE: PerformanceSymptoms: Heat exchangers, jackets or presses take longer to heat.
Prevention: Heat-up times logged for key users.
Frozen or damaged traps
Hits OEE: AvailabilitySymptoms: Traps or lines freeze in cold weather.
Prevention: Outdoor traps checked before winter.
Strainer blocked
Hits OEE: AvailabilitySymptoms: The trap stops passing condensate because the strainer is full.
Prevention: Strainers blown down on the planned routine.
Condensate return contaminated
Hits OEE: QualitySymptoms: Returned condensate is cloudy, oily or has product in it.
Prevention: Condensate quality monitored at the return.
Trap tests giving unclear results
Hits OEE: QualitySymptoms: Surveys disagree about which traps have failed.
Prevention: A numbered trap register with each survey result.
Trap bypass left open
Hits OEE: PerformanceSymptoms: Steam blows to the condensate return through an open bypass valve.
Prevention: Bypass positions checked on the trap survey.

Stop the same fault coming back
Recurring steam trap stops usually trace to a cause you cannot see by hand. The partner we recommend is Fabrico: it tracks OEE and downtime live from PLCs, IoT sensors or AI cameras; where cameras are fitted, the video of a stop sits next to its machine data so the cause can be reviewed; and a technician opens the work order from the stop in the same system. Data is hosted in the AWS EU region, and Fabrico and the company behind it hold ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO 9001.
