Problems on this page:

Product not fully peeled

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Peel stays on the product after the peeler, and the line needs more hand trimming.

Steam pressure or hold time too low
Check the pressure and time in the recipe against the approved settings for that product.
Product size mix too wide
Grade the product by size before peeling so each batch heats evenly.
Steam supply wet
Check the steam separator and traps on the supply to the vessel.
Peel removal after the vessel not working
Check the brushes or washer after the peeler for wear and water flow.

Prevention: Peel left on the product sampled each hour.

Peel loss too high

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Too much of the product is lost with the peel, and yield falls.

Hold time too long
Reduce the hold time to the shortest that still peels the product.
Pressure too high for the product
Check the pressure setting against the product and its condition.
Brushes after the vessel too aggressive
Adjust the brush speed and condition.
Raw product quality changed
Check the raw product condition and adjust the recipe for it.

Prevention: Peel loss measured by weighing product before and after peeling.

Vessel not sealing

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Steam leaks at the lid or door, and the vessel cannot reach pressure.

Lid seal worn or damaged
Replace the seal and check the seat for damage.
Product pieces caught in the seal
Clean the seal face and check the loading sequence.
Lid locking mechanism out of adjustment
Adjust the locking mechanism as the maker specifies.
Seal not suited to the steam temperature
Fit the seal material the maker specifies.

Prevention: Seals inspected at each planned maintenance stop.

Pressure safety alarms

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The peeler stops on a pressure or interlock alarm.

Pressure switch or transmitter fault
Check the instrument against a test gauge; a pressure vessel must never run with a bypassed safety device.
Lid interlock not made
Check the interlock switch and its target.
Vent or exhaust valve sticking
Service the vent valve and check its actuator air.
Steam supply pressure too high
Check the pressure reducing valve on the supply.

Prevention: Safety devices tested on the schedule the pressure vessel rules require.

Cycle time too long

Hits OEE: Performance

Symptoms: Each peeling cycle takes longer than the standard, and the line waits for the peeler.

Steam supply pressure drops when the vessel fills
Check the boiler and supply line can deliver the steam the peeler needs.
Vent or exhaust slow
Check the exhaust valve and silencer for blockage.
Loading or unloading slow
Check the feed hopper and discharge for blockages.
Rotation of the vessel slow
Check the drive and gearbox of the vessel.

Prevention: Cycle time trended per product.

Product burnt or cooked layer too deep

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: The peeled surface is darkened, or the cooked ring under the peel is deeper than the specification.

Hold time too long for the size grade
Set a hold time for each size grade instead of one time for all sizes.
Product not cooled straight after peeling
Check the water flow in the cooling or washing step after discharge.
Vessel pressure running above the recipe
Check the pressure control loop and the transmitter.
Product left in the vessel after the cycle ends
Check that the discharge starts as soon as the vent is complete.

Prevention: Cooked layer checked on a cut sample each hour.

Steam use too high

Hits OEE: Performance

Symptoms: The peeler uses more steam per tonne of product than it used to.

Steam traps on the supply failing open
Test the traps on the supply line and repair those passing live steam.
Lid seals leaking during the hold
Replace worn seals and check the seat.
Hold time or pressure raised over time
Compare the running settings with the approved recipe and restore them.
Insulation on the vessel or pipework damaged
Repair damaged or wet insulation.

Prevention: Steam use per tonne of product recorded weekly.

Peel and water handling blocking

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The peel removal or water recovery system blocks and stops the peeling line.

Peel pump or screw blocked
Isolate the drive before clearing the blockage, then check the screen ahead of it.
Screen blinded with peel
Clean the screen and check that its spray bars are working.
Water flow to the brushes or washer low
Check the water supply, valves and nozzles.
Waste conveyor or bins not keeping up
Check the conveyor speed and the bin change routine.

Prevention: Peel handling cleaned at the interval set for the product.

Stop the same fault coming back

Recurring steam peeler stops usually trace to a cause you cannot see by hand. The partner we recommend is Fabrico: it tracks OEE and downtime live from PLCs, IoT sensors or AI cameras; where cameras are fitted, the video of a stop sits next to its machine data so the cause can be reviewed; and a technician opens the work order from the stop in the same system. Data is hosted in the AWS EU region, and Fabrico and the company behind it hold ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO 9001.
