Problems on this page:

Scumming in non-image areas

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Ink appears in areas that should stay clean.

Too little dampening solution
Increase the dampening and check the rollers.
Fountain solution conductivity or pH wrong
Check and correct the fountain solution.
Plate not processed correctly
Check the plate.
Ink too soft
Check the ink with the supplier.

Prevention: Fountain solution measured at each shift.

Hickeys on the print

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Small spots with a ring around them appear in solids.

Paper dust or debris
Clean the blankets and check the paper.
Dried ink skin in the duct
Clean the ink duct and rollers.
Plate or blanket damage
Check and replace damaged items.
Spray powder build-up
Clean the press and reduce powder.

Prevention: Blanket washing at the set interval.

Registration problems

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Colours do not line up from sheet to sheet.

Sheet feeding to the lays uneven
Check the front and side lays.
Gripper tension uneven
Check the grippers.
Paper stretch from moisture
Condition the paper.
Plate bending or mounting error
Check the plate.

Prevention: Register checked with marks during the run.

Doubling or slur

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Images appear doubled or smeared in the direction of travel.

Blanket packing wrong
Pack the blanket to the right height.
Blanket loose
Retension the blanket.
Cylinder pressure wrong
Check the pressure setting.
Too much ink
Reduce the ink film.

Prevention: Packing gauge check at each blanket change.

Sheet feeding faults

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Double sheets, misses or skewed sheets stop the press.

Feeder air and suckers wrong
Adjust the feeder settings.
Static in the pile
Fan the pile and use static control.
Curled paper
Store and condition the paper.
Double sheet detector out of adjustment
Calibrate the detector.

Prevention: Feeder settings recorded per stock.

Set-off in the delivery pile

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Ink transfers to the back of the next sheet.

Too much ink
Reduce the ink density.
Spray powder low
Adjust the powder.
Pile too high
Reduce the pile height.
Ink drying too slowly
Check the ink and drying.

Prevention: Pile checks at regular intervals.

Roller stripes or streaks

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Lines appear across the print.

Roller settings wrong
Set the roller stripes to the maker values.
Roller glazed or swollen
Replace or deglaze the roller.
Bearings worn
Check the roller bearings.
Vibration in the press
Check gears and cylinders.

Prevention: Roller stripe checks on the monthly PM.

Blanket smash

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: A blanket is damaged after a folded or double sheet goes through.

Double sheet not detected
Check the detector.
Folded sheet from the feeder
Check the feeder.
Debris in the press
Clean the press.
Wrong blanket type
Use a blanket that recovers from small smashes.

Prevention: Spare blankets kept for each unit.

Colour density drifting during the run

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Solids get stronger or weaker as the run goes on, and sheets no longer match the approved proof.

Ink and water balance drifting
Watch the dampening setting and correct it in small steps.
Ink rollers warming up
Check the roller temperature control where the press has it.
Ink key settings or fountain roller speed changed
Check the ink keys and the duct roller sweep.
Paper lot with different absorbency
Check the paper lot and adjust the ink to the new stock.

Prevention: Densities measured on a control strip at fixed intervals.

Plate wear on long runs

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Fine dots and highlights disappear and the image weakens before the run is finished.

Plate to blanket pressure too high
Set the packing and pressure to the maker values.
Abrasive paper coating
Check the paper with the supplier and plan for more plates on that stock.
Fountain solution chemistry wrong
Check the conductivity and pH.
Plate type not suited to the run length
Use plates rated for the run, baked if the plate maker requires it.

Prevention: Run lengths per plate logged so early wear is noticed.

Stop the same fault coming back

Recurring offset press stops usually trace to a cause you cannot see by hand. The partner we recommend is Fabrico: it tracks OEE and downtime live from PLCs, IoT sensors or AI cameras; where cameras are fitted, the video of a stop sits next to its machine data so the cause can be reviewed; and a technician opens the work order from the stop in the same system. Data is hosted in the AWS EU region, and Fabrico and the company behind it hold ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO 9001.
