Problems on this page:

Web breaks

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Web snaps during the run, frequent stops and re-threads.

Tension too high or uneven
Set unwind/rewind tension and taper; check load cells/dancers.
Nicked slit edge or dull knives
Replace or reposition knives; check the edge quality.
Roll defects or splices
Inspect parent rolls; manage splices and defects.

Prevention: Tension control, knife maintenance, parent-roll quality.

Roll telescoping or baggy edges

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Finished rolls slip sideways or have loose, baggy edges.

Tension or taper profile wrong
Tune the taper tension through the build.
Misaligned cores or rollers
Align cores, chucks and idlers.
Caliper variation across the web
Address gauge bands upstream; spread the web.

Prevention: Taper-tension setup, alignment, caliper control.

Wrinkles or poor slit edge

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Wrinkles in the web, ragged or dusty slit edges.

Worn or wrong knives/anvils
Replace knives and bands; set correct overlap/depth.
Spreading or alignment issue
Add/adjust spreader rollers; align the path.
Tension or nip wrong
Tune tension and nip pressure.

Prevention: Knife maintenance, web spreading, tension and nip control.

Slitting dust and debris

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Dust and fragments on the slit edges and inside the rolls.

Dull or chipped knives
Change knives on a planned length and inspect the edges.
Slitting method not suited to the material
Use the method that suits the material: razor, shear or crush.
Weak extraction at the knives
Check the extraction hoods and the fan.
Static holding the dust on the web
Fit static bars close to the knives.

Prevention: Knife changes on a planned length.

Static build-up

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Operators get shocks, dust sticks to the film, layers fly apart while winding.

Dry air
Keep humidity in the range the material supplier advises.
Static bars missing or failed
Fit static bars and test them weekly.
Poor grounding
Bond and ground the machine frame and rollers.

Prevention: Static bars tested weekly.

Wrong roll length or diameter

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Rolls come out longer or shorter than ordered, or diameters vary across the set.

Length counter or encoder fault
Check the counter against a measured length.
Splices not accounted for
Record splices and adjust the length.
Wrong job settings
Check the settings against the order before starting.
Winding tension changing the wound length
Keep winding tension even across the set.

Prevention: Length checked on the first rolls of each job.

Core problems

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Cores crush, slip on the chucks, or are the wrong size.

Core chucks slipping
Check the chuck inflation or grip.
Cores crushed by the winding pressure
Use cores rated for the roll weight and tension.
Wrong core size
Check the core size against the order.
Cores cut unevenly
Check the core cutter.

Prevention: Core strength and size checked at goods in.

Slow knife setting at changeover

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Changeovers take long because knives are set by hand and checked by trial.

Knives positioned by hand
Mark positions or use automatic knife setting where the machine has it.
Worn knife holders
Repair the holders so positions hold.
No setup sheet
Write setup sheets for repeat jobs.
Knives and cores not ready before the stop
Prepare them while the last job runs.

Prevention: Changeover times recorded and reviewed.

Stop the same fault coming back

Recurring slitter rewinder stops usually trace to a cause you cannot see by hand. The partner we recommend is Fabrico: it tracks OEE and downtime live from PLCs, IoT sensors or AI cameras; where cameras are fitted, the video of a stop sits next to its machine data so the cause can be reviewed; and a technician opens the work order from the stop in the same system. Data is hosted in the AWS EU region, and Fabrico and the company behind it hold ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO 9001.
