Problems on this page:

Foil not transferring fully

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: The stamped image has gaps or areas where the foil did not stick.

Die temperature too low
Check the die temperature against the setting for the foil and substrate.
Stamping pressure too low or uneven
Check the pressure and make-ready so the die contacts evenly.
Dwell time too short
Increase the dwell time in small steps and compare.
Foil type not suited to the substrate
Check the foil grade with the foil supplier for that material.

Prevention: Stamped image checked against the approved sample at each start.

Fill-in or ragged edges

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Fine detail fills in, or edges look ragged.

Die temperature too high
Reduce the die temperature for fine detail.
Pressure too high
Reduce the pressure and check the make-ready.
Foil grade too heavy for fine detail
Use a foil grade meant for fine detail.
Die worn or damaged
Inspect the die under magnification.

Prevention: Fine detail checked under magnification on samples.

Foil wrinkling or breaking

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The foil wrinkles across the die or breaks in the feed.

Foil tension uneven
Check the foil unwind brake and the rewind tension.
Foil path rollers misaligned
Align the foil rollers.
Foil advance too short or too long
Set the foil advance for the image size.
Foil roll damaged at the edges
Check the foil rolls before loading.

Prevention: Foil breaks recorded per roll.

Heating faults

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The die plate does not reach temperature or overheats.

Heater element failed
Test the heater elements with the machine isolated.
Thermocouple faulty or loose
Check the thermocouple and its seating in the heating plate.
Controller fault
Check the controller output and relay.
Heating plate insulation damaged
Check the insulation between heating plate and frame.

Prevention: Die temperature checked at every start.

Foil waste too high

Hits OEE: Performance

Symptoms: More foil is used per job than planned.

Advance longer than the image needs
Set the foil advance to the image length plus the minimum margin.
Foil roll wider than the image
Use a foil width matched to the image.
Multiple images not nested
Use the step-and-repeat or jump feature where the machine has one.
Start-up waste
Record and reduce the waste used for make-ready.

Prevention: Foil use per job recorded.

Image position off

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: The foil image lands in the wrong place.

Feeder or gripper position changed
Check the sheet or part position against the job settings.
Die mounted in a different place
Use a registration system for mounting dies.
Substrate size varying
Check the substrate dimensions.
Sensor for the print mark dirty
Clean the registration sensor.

Prevention: Image position checked on the first sheet or part.

Burn marks or blistering on the substrate

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: The substrate scorches or blisters around the image.

Die temperature too high for the material
Reduce the temperature and test on scrap.
Dwell too long
Shorten the dwell time until the foil still transfers fully.
Coated substrate sensitive to heat
Check the coating heat limit with the substrate supplier.
Moisture in the substrate
Store the substrate in a dry place and let it acclimatise before stamping.

Prevention: Substrate appearance checked on samples.

Long make-ready

Hits OEE: Performance

Symptoms: Getting a new job right takes long.

Make-ready done from scratch
Keep the make-ready sheet and settings for repeat jobs.
Dies not checked before mounting
Inspect dies for damage and cleanliness before the job.
Settings not recorded
Record temperature, pressure and dwell per job.
Foil not staged
Stage the right foil roll at the machine before the job starts.

Prevention: Make-ready time recorded per job.

Stop the same fault coming back

Recurring hot foil stamping machine stops usually trace to a cause you cannot see by hand. The partner we recommend is Fabrico: it tracks OEE and downtime live from PLCs, IoT sensors or AI cameras; where cameras are fitted, the video of a stop sits next to its machine data so the cause can be reviewed; and a technician opens the work order from the stop in the same system. Data is hosted in the AWS EU region, and Fabrico and the company behind it hold ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO 9001.
