Problems on this page:

Low tonnage / will not build force

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Press cannot reach set tonnage, parts under-formed.

Relief valve set low or worn
Verify and reset relief pressure; service if bypassing.
Worn pump / internal leakage
Test pump flow; check cylinder seals and valves for bypass.
Low or aerated oil
Top up; bleed air; check suction.

Prevention: Pressure verification, seal/pump condition, oil condition.

Ram drift / creep

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Ram drifts down when held, dimensional/quality issues, safety concern.

Internal valve leakage
Identify the leaking holding/check valve; reseal or replace.
Worn cylinder seals
Reseal the main cylinder.
Counterbalance valve fault
Service or replace the counterbalance/pilot-operated check valve.

Prevention: Valve and seal maintenance, periodic drift testing.

Slow cycle / long dwell

Hits OEE: Performance

Symptoms: Press cycles slowly, long approach or dwell, throughput down.

Low flow / worn pump
Test pump output; rebuild or replace if worn.
Relief partially bypassing
Verify relief setting; service if it leaks by.
Aerated or low oil
Top up and bleed air; check suction.

Prevention: Pump condition, relief verification, oil condition.

Oil overheating

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Oil temperature alarms, the ram slows, seals harden.

Oil flowing over the relief valve while idle
Check that the pump unloads between strokes.
Cooler fouled or cooling water low
Clean the cooler and check the water flow or fan.
Low oil level
Top up and find the leak.
Long dwell at full pressure
Hold pressure only as long as the part needs.

Prevention: Oil temperature trended and the cooler cleaned on a schedule.

Oil leaks at the ram or fittings

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Oil on the bolster, die or floor, and a falling oil level.

Worn ram seals
Replace the seals and check the ram surface for scoring.
Loose or worn fittings
Tighten or replace them with fittings rated for the pressure.
Aged or rubbing hoses
Replace and clamp the hoses away from rubbing points.
Pressure shock at decompression
Check the decompression valve and its timing.

Prevention: Hose and seal inspections on the route.

Uneven forming across the bed

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Parts are formed deeper on one side and the die wears on one side.

Gibs or guides worn or loose
Adjust or replace the gibs.
Off-centre loading
Centre the die load or balance the work across the bed.
Bolster or ram face worn
Check flatness and parallelism and plan a regrind.

Prevention: Parallelism checks at planned intervals.

Bang at the end of the pressing stroke

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: A loud bang when pressure is released, lines shaking, fittings working loose.

Decompression too fast
Set a controlled decompression before the ram returns.
Decompression valve faulty
Check and repair the valve.
Decompression stage not suited to the cylinder
Make sure the decompression stage matches the trapped oil volume.

Prevention: Decompression settings recorded with the press documents.

Light curtain or two-hand control faults

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The press will not stroke, the light curtain shows a fault, or the two-hand control does not respond.

Light curtain dirty or misaligned
Clean and re-align the transmitter and receiver.
Muting or blanking settings changed
Restore the validated settings; any change needs a safety review.
Two-hand buttons worn or not pressed together
Replace worn buttons; both must be pressed within the allowed time.
Safety relay fault
Read the safety relay diagnostics. Never bypass a safety device.

Prevention: Safety device checks at the start of every shift.

Guidance only. Always follow lockout/tagout and your site's safe-work procedures, and verify against OEM manuals before acting.

Stop the same fault coming back

Recurring hydraulic press stops usually trace to a cause you cannot see by hand. The partner we recommend is Fabrico: it tracks OEE and downtime live from PLCs, IoT sensors or AI cameras; where cameras are fitted, the video of a stop sits next to its machine data so the cause can be reviewed; and a technician opens the work order from the stop in the same system. Data is hosted in the AWS EU region, and Fabrico and the company behind it hold ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO 9001.
