Problems on this page:

Glue spread uneven

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Glue coverage varies across the panel, giving weak or starved bond lines.

Doctor roll gap uneven across the width
Set the doctor roll gap with feeler gauges at both ends and the middle.
Applicator roll worn or grooved
Check the rubber roll surface and regrind or replace it.
Glue viscosity changing with temperature
Check the glue temperature and viscosity during the shift.
Glue dried on the rolls
Clean the rolls at every break and at the end of the shift.

Prevention: Glue spread weighed on a test sheet at the start of each shift.

Too much glue used

Hits OEE: Performance

Symptoms: Glue consumption per square metre is above the target.

Doctor roll gap set too wide
Set the gap to the spread the bonding specification needs, then weigh a test sheet.
Applicator roll running faster than the panel feed
Check the roll speed ratio to the feed.
Glue dripping past the end dams
Check and adjust the end dams.
No spread check done
Weigh a test sheet at the start of every shift and after changes.

Prevention: Glue use per square metre recorded weekly.

Delamination of finished panels

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Panels delaminate after pressing.

Open time exceeded before pressing
Check the time between spreading and pressing against the glue data.
Glue spread too low
Weigh a test sheet and compare with the spread the glue maker specifies.
Wood moisture outside the glue limits
Measure the moisture of the components before gluing.
Press temperature or time too low
Check the press temperature, pressure and time against the glue data sheet.

Prevention: Bond tests done on samples from each batch.

Glue curing in the machine

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Glue thickens or sets on the rolls and in the tray during the shift.

Pot life of mixed glue exceeded
Mix only the quantity used within the pot life on the glue data sheet.
Room or glue too warm
Check the room temperature and keep glue out of direct heat.
Rolls not cleaned during breaks
Clean the rolls at every break longer than the open time.
Mixing ratio wrong for a two-part glue
Check the mixing ratio and the dosing equipment.

Prevention: Glue mixing records kept per batch.

Panels marked or creased

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Marks or creases from the rolls appear on veneers or thin panels.

Roll pressure too high for the material
Reduce the roll pressure for thin veneers.
Dried glue lumps on the rolls
Clean the rolls and check the cleaning routine.
Panels fed at an angle
Check the infeed guides and train operators on feeding.
Roll bearings worn, letting rolls move
Check the roll bearings for play.

Prevention: Panels inspected after spreading on samples.

Drive or roll speed faults

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The rolls stop or run at uneven speed.

Drive chain or belt worn
Check the drive chain or belt and its tension.
Drive motor fault
Check the motor current and its protection.
Gears worn
Check the gears between the rolls.
Glue too thick, loading the rolls
Check the glue viscosity and level in the tray.

Prevention: Drive checked weekly.

Safety and nip guard problems

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The nip guard or emergency stop does not work as it should.

Nip guard missing or misplaced
Refit the nip guard; roll nips can draw in hands.
Emergency stop wire slack
Adjust the trip wire.
Stop button faulty
Test the stop.
Cleaning done with rolls running
Clean only with rolls stopped, or with the inch function the maker provides.

Prevention: Stops tested at each shift start.

Glue tray or pump problems

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Glue does not reach the rolls evenly, or the tray runs dry.

Glue pump worn
Check the glue pump output.
Tray level control faulty
Check the level sensor and control.
Glue lines blocked with cured glue
Flush the lines at the end of each shift.
Strainer blocked
Clean the strainer on the glue supply.

Prevention: Glue supply checked each shift.

Stop the same fault coming back

Recurring glue spreader stops usually trace to a cause you cannot see by hand. The partner we recommend is Fabrico: it tracks OEE and downtime live from PLCs, IoT sensors or AI cameras; where cameras are fitted, the video of a stop sits next to its machine data so the cause can be reviewed; and a technician opens the work order from the stop in the same system. Data is hosted in the AWS EU region, and Fabrico and the company behind it hold ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO 9001.
