Problems on this page:

Fill weight off target

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Bags are overweight or underweight against the order.

Load cells not calibrated
Calibrate the load cells with test weights on the schedule your quality plan sets.
Product flow too fast at the end of the fill
Use a coarse and fine feed and set the cut-off point.
Bag frame touching the structure
Check that the weighing frame hangs free.
Product density changed
Adjust the settings for the batch.

Prevention: Check weighing of sample bags each shift.

Dust escaping during filling

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Dust clouds come out around the bag spout during filling.

Spout seal not inflating
Check the inflatable seal and its air supply.
Dust extraction too weak
Check the extraction fan, ducts and filter.
Bag spout not fitted correctly
Train operators on fitting the spout fully.
Bag not vented
Use the venting the bag and filler are designed for.

Prevention: Spout seal checked at the start of each shift.

Bags unstable or leaning

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Filled bags lean, bulge unevenly or fall over.

Product not settled during filling
Use the vibration or densifying table during the fill.
Bag loops at different heights
Set the loop hooks evenly.
Pallet not level
Check the pallet and the platform.
Bag type not suited to the product
Use bags with baffles for products that need them.

Prevention: Bag shape checked on the first bags of each product.

Loop hooks not releasing

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The filled bag stays hooked and the operator has to release it by hand.

Hook mechanism stiff
Clean and lubricate the hooks.
Air supply low
Check the air pressure to the hook cylinders.
Loops twisted on the hook
Train operators on loop fitting.
Hook sensor fault
Check the sensors.

Prevention: Hook function checked at start-up.

Product bridging in the feed hopper

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Flow to the bag stops although the hopper still holds product.

Hopper walls too shallow for the product
Fit flow aids or change the hopper liner.
Product damp or caking
Check the product moisture.
Feeder outlet too small
Check the outlet size for the product.
Flow aid not working
Check the vibrator or aeration pads.

Prevention: Flow aid function checked weekly.

Bag liners not inflating or pulled in

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: The inner liner collapses, folds into the product, or tears.

Liner inflation air not working
Check the inflation blower and its timing.
Liner not fixed to the spout
Attach the liner properly before filling.
Extraction too strong pulling the liner
Balance extraction and inflation.
Liner size wrong
Use the liner matched to the bag.

Prevention: Liner fitting covered in operator training.

Fill takes too long

Hits OEE: Performance

Symptoms: Each bag takes longer to fill than planned.

Feeder speed limited
Check the feeder setting and drive.
Settling time too long
Optimise the densifying cycle.
Bag changeover slow
Prepare the next bag and pallet before the fill finishes.
Upstream supply not keeping up
Check the supply silo and conveying.

Prevention: Bags per hour tracked by product.

Bag spout leaking after closing

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Product leaks from the spout after the bag is tied.

Spout not tied tightly
Use the closure method the bag maker recommends.
Product in the spout when tying
Let the flow stop fully before releasing the spout.
Spout too short to tie
Specify bags with the right spout length.
Liner not closed separately
Close the liner before the outer spout.

Prevention: Closure checked on sample bags at the end of the line.

Stop the same fault coming back

Recurring big bag filler stops usually trace to a cause you cannot see by hand. The partner we recommend is Fabrico: it tracks OEE and downtime live from PLCs, IoT sensors or AI cameras; where cameras are fitted, the video of a stop sits next to its machine data so the cause can be reviewed; and a technician opens the work order from the stop in the same system. Data is hosted in the AWS EU region, and Fabrico and the company behind it hold ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO 9001.
