Industrial machinery mechanics (SOC 49-9041) earned a median $31.02 an hour in the United States in May 2025, and general maintenance and repair workers (SOC 49-9071) $23.84, according to the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics. Among the 50 states, the mechanic median runs from $27.77 in Mississippi to $37.66 in Wyoming.
Two maintenance occupations side by side for every state: industrial machinery mechanics, who keep production machinery running, and general maintenance and repair workers, who cover several crafts. Figures are the BLS May 2025 estimates, released 15 May 2026, as published and not re-rounded.
Key numbers
- Highest mechanic medians: Wyoming $37.66, Nevada $37.38, Alaska $37.21, Hawaii $37.18; District of Columbia $42.15 (BLS OEWS, May 2025).

Median hourly wage by state
How to use these numbers in your plant
Turn a wage into a loaded labor rate
OEWS wages are straight-time pay: they exclude overtime, shift differentials and the employer cost of benefits (BLS technical note). In private industry manufacturing, wages and salaries were $34.53 of $51.94 total compensation per hour worked for installation, maintenance, and repair occupations in June 2026, or 66.5 percent (BLS ECEC, Table 4). Divide a wage by 0.665 for a rough loaded rate: the national mechanic median of $31.02 becomes $46.65 an hour (our arithmetic). Your own payroll burden is better when you have it.
Type it into the Loaded labor rate field of the downtime cost calculator to cost idle maintenance staff or the repair crew's time. The field is labeled in euros; the math works the same in dollars.
Loaded rate for your state
Median wage from the table divided by 0.665: an estimate, not a quote.
Enter these in the calculators' Loaded labor rate and Wrench time fields.
Why wrench time changes the rate
A mechanic is paid for every hour on the clock, but the backlog only shrinks during hours on tools. The cost of a productive hour is the loaded rate times paid hours divided by hours on tools: at 30 measured hours on tools in a 40 hour week, $46.65 becomes $62.20 (example arithmetic, not a benchmark). Measure your own crew from work order time stamps or a work sampling study. The maintenance backlog calculator uses the same hours on tools to turn backlog hours into weeks.
Check an offer before you hire
An offer near the state's 10th percentile is below what 90 percent of that occupation earns there. OEWS covers employees only, so compare it with a staff offer, not a contractor's bill.

- Selection: industry 000000 (all industries), 2018 SOC codes 49-9041 and 49-9071, the national area 0000000 and the 51 statewide areas, data types 01 to 15. The table shows 01, 03, 04, 06, 08 and 10.
- Rounding: as published by BLS, not re-rounded. Computed by OEE Lab: the median gap and the loaded rate (rounded to the cent).
- Checks: 25 values pulled again through the BLS Public Data API matched, as did the BLS OEWS Profiles national rows and the Alabama state page; percentiles rise in every row; annual equals hourly times 2,080 within rounding.

FAQ
How much does an industrial maintenance mechanic make an hour?
Industrial machinery mechanics (SOC 49-9041) earned a median $31.02 an hour and a mean $32.91 in May 2025, according to BLS OEWS. The 10th percentile was $22.17 and the 90th percentile $45.76. The mean annual wage was $68,460.
Which state pays industrial machinery mechanics the most?
Among the 50 states, Wyoming has the highest median at $37.66 an hour, followed by Nevada at $37.38. The District of Columbia is higher still at $42.15. Mississippi has the lowest state median, $27.77 (BLS OEWS, May 2025).
What is the difference between an industrial machinery mechanic and a general maintenance and repair worker?
Industrial machinery mechanics (49-9041) "repair, install, adjust, or maintain industrial production and processing machinery or refinery and pipeline distribution systems" (BLS OEWS Profiles). General maintenance and repair workers (49-9071) "perform work involving the skills of two or more maintenance or craft occupations to keep machines, mechanical equipment, or the structure of a building in repair" (BLS OEWS Profiles). Nationally the mechanic median is $7.18 an hour higher (computed from BLS OEWS, May 2025).
Do these wages include overtime and benefits?
No. OEWS wages are straight-time pay without overtime, shift differentials or benefit costs (BLS OEWS technical note). For a rough loaded rate, divide by 0.665, the wage share of compensation for installation, maintenance, and repair occupations in private industry manufacturing in June 2026 (BLS ECEC, Table 4).
How current is this data?
These are the BLS May 2025 estimates, released 15 May 2026, the latest when we pulled them on 14 October 2026. BLS publishes new OEWS estimates each year; we will update this page and the CSV when they are out.
