Problems on this page:

Ice production falling

Hits OEE: Performance

Symptoms: The machine makes less ice than it should, and the processing line runs short.

Condenser dirty or condenser air or water too warm
Clean the condenser and check the cooling air or water temperature.
Refrigerant charge low
Have a qualified refrigeration technician check for leaks and the charge.
Water supply pressure or flow low
Check the water supply, the strainer and the float valve.
Evaporator drum scaled
Descale the evaporator as the maker specifies.

Prevention: Ice output recorded daily so a drop shows early.

Ice too wet or too soft

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: The flakes are wet and stick together instead of being dry and loose.

Evaporator not cold enough
Check the suction pressure and the refrigerant charge.
Water flow over the drum too high
Check the water distributor and the pump.
Inlet water too warm
Check the inlet water temperature.
Ice storage bin too warm
Check the bin insulation and the room temperature.

Prevention: Ice quality checked at each shift start.

Scraper or cutter faults

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The ice scraper jams, makes noise or stops.

Scraper blade worn or misaligned
Check the blade and its gap to the drum.
Gearbox or reducer oil low
Check the oil level in the scraper gearbox and top it up.
Ice too hard from overcooling
Check the evaporating temperature setting for the ice type.
Bearing worn
Check the scraper bearings for noise and play.

Prevention: Scraper checked on the maintenance plan.

Machine tripping on high pressure

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The refrigeration compressor stops on a high pressure alarm.

Condenser fan or water pump failed
Check the condenser fan or the condenser water pump.
Condenser blocked with dust or scale
Clean the condenser coil or descale the water-cooled condenser.
Machine room too hot
Improve the ventilation of the machine room.
Air or other gases in the refrigerant circuit
Have a qualified refrigeration technician check the circuit.

Prevention: High pressure trips recorded with the room temperature.

Hygiene problems in ice

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Ice used on food fails microbiological tests.

Water supply quality poor
Test the incoming water and the filter on the supply.
Ice bin not cleaned on schedule
Empty and clean the bin at the interval the hygiene plan sets.
Scoops and shovels left in the ice
Store scoops outside the ice in a clean holder.
Water circuit not sanitised
Sanitise the water circuit as the maker specifies.

Prevention: Ice tested on the schedule the hygiene plan sets.

Water leaking

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Water collects on the floor around the machine or bin.

Drain blocked
Clear the drain and check its fall.
Float valve stuck open
Repair or replace the float valve.
Supply hose split
Replace the hose with one rated for the pressure.
Water distributor overflowing
Check the distributor and the water pump flow.

Prevention: Machine area checked for leaks daily.

Ice bin bridging

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Ice clumps in the storage bin and does not flow out.

Bin too warm, so ice partly melts and refreezes
Check the bin lid and insulation, since melting and refreezing glues the flakes together.
Ice produced wet
Work through the wet ice causes.
Bin rake or auger stopped
Check the rake or auger drive.
Ice stored too long
Use ice in the order it was made.

Prevention: Bin flow checked daily.

Energy use high

Hits OEE: Performance

Symptoms: The machine uses more electricity for the same amount of ice.

Condenser dirty
Clean the condenser on a set schedule.
Machine running when no ice is needed
Schedule production to match ice use.
Bin insulation damaged
Repair the insulation.
Refrigerant charge low
Have the charge checked by a qualified technician.

Prevention: Energy use per tonne of ice trended monthly.

Stop the same fault coming back

Recurring flake ice machine stops usually trace to a cause you cannot see by hand. The partner we recommend is Fabrico: it tracks OEE and downtime live from PLCs, IoT sensors or AI cameras; where cameras are fitted, the video of a stop sits next to its machine data so the cause can be reviewed; and a technician opens the work order from the stop in the same system. Data is hosted in the AWS EU region, and Fabrico and the company behind it hold ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO 9001.
