Problems on this page:

Clips not closing or leaking

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Clipped casings leak or the clip opens during cooking or handling.

Clip size wrong for the casing calibre
Check the clip size and type against the casing.
Closing pressure set too low
Set the clip closing pressure for the casing and clip.
Die or punch worn
Inspect the clip die and punch and replace worn parts.
Product in the clip area
Check the displacer settings so the gathered casing is clean at the clip.

Prevention: Clip closure checked on samples each hour.

Clip jams in the feed

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Clips jam in the feed rail and the machine stops.

Clip spool loaded wrongly
Load the clip spool in the direction and position the maker shows.
Clip rail dirty or damaged
Clean the clip rail and check it for burrs or bends.
Clips from a different supplier or batch
Check the clips against the machine specification.
Feed spring weak
Replace the clip feed spring when clips stop advancing smoothly.

Prevention: Jams recorded per shift.

Casing torn at the clip

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: The casing tears right next to the clip.

Displacer gathering the casing too hard
Reduce the displacer stroke or pressure for the casing type.
Knife cutting too close to the clip
Check the knife position and its timing in the cycle.
Casing brake too tight
Adjust the casing brake for the casing type and calibre.
Casing not prepared as specified
Check the soaking or conditioning the casing supplier requires.

Prevention: Torn casings counted per batch.

Portion length or weight varying

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Portions between clips vary in length or weight.

Filler portioning not steady
Check the filler portion settings and the wear of its pump.
Casing calibre varying between reels
Check the casing calibre against the specification.
Casing brake setting changed
Compare the brake setting with the product recipe.
Timing between filler and clipper drifting
Check the signal and timing between the two machines.

Prevention: Portion weights checked on samples each hour.

Loop hanger not attached

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The hanging loop is missing or loose, so the product cannot be hung for cooking.

Loop supply empty or jammed
Check the loop spool and the loop feed path.
Loop placed in the wrong position
Adjust the loop placement relative to the clip.
Loop material changed
Check the loop specification against the machine settings.
Sensor not detecting the loop
Clean the loop sensor and check its setting.

Prevention: Loops checked on samples each hour.

Pneumatic faults

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The clipper moves slowly or does not complete its cycle.

Air pressure low at the machine
Check the air supply pressure while the clipper runs.
Water or oil in the air
Drain the filters and check the dryer on the air supply.
Cylinder seals worn
Replace the seals of the slow or leaking cylinder.
Valve sticking
Service or replace the sticking valve.

Prevention: Air pressure and filters checked daily.

Guarding and safety faults

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The clipper stops on guard or interlock faults.

Guard switch out of alignment
Align the guard switch and its actuator.
Guard damaged or loose
Repair the guard so it closes fully.
Safety relay fault
Have the safety circuit tested by qualified staff.
Interlock bypassed
Remove any bypass and find why it was fitted; the clipping head can cause serious hand injuries.

Prevention: Guards and interlocks tested weekly.

Cleaning problems

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Meat residue stays in the clipping head after cleaning, and swabs fail.

Clipping head not opened for cleaning
Open the head as the cleaning instructions show, with the machine isolated.
Cleaning water too cold
Check the cleaning water temperature.
Detergent not suited to the soil
Use the detergent approved for meat soils and the machine materials.
No written cleaning method
Write the cleaning sequence with photos and train the cleaners.

Prevention: Swabs taken after cleaning.

Guidance only. Always follow lockout/tagout and your site's safe-work procedures, and verify against OEM manuals before acting.

Stop the same fault coming back

Recurring clipping machine stops usually trace to a cause you cannot see by hand. The partner we recommend is Fabrico: it tracks OEE and downtime live from PLCs, IoT sensors or AI cameras; where cameras are fitted, the video of a stop sits next to its machine data so the cause can be reviewed; and a technician opens the work order from the stop in the same system. Data is hosted in the AWS EU region, and Fabrico and the company behind it hold ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO 9001.
