Problems on this page:

Product not frozen to the target core temperature

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Core temperature checks at the outfeed are above the target.

Belt speed too fast for the product
Set the belt speed so the dwell time matches the product, and record it per product.
Air temperature in the freezer too high
Check the refrigeration plant, the suction pressure and the evaporator for ice.
Product entering warmer than planned
Check the infeed temperature and the time product waits before freezing.
Airflow blocked by ice or a failed fan
Defrost the evaporator and check every fan is running.

Prevention: Core temperature checked and logged on a fixed schedule for each product.

Evaporator icing up quickly

Hits OEE: Performance

Symptoms: The evaporator coil fills with ice well before the planned defrost, and the air temperature rises.

Warm moist air entering at the infeed or outfeed
Check the curtains and openings and keep doors closed during production.
Wet or uncovered product
Drain or chill product before the freezer where the process allows.
Defrost schedule not suited to the production run
Adjust the defrost intervals to the product and the season.
Defrost not completing
Check the defrost heaters or hot gas valves and the drain.

Prevention: Ice on the coil checked at the end of each run.

Belt catching, jumping or overlapping

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The belt jerks, rides up on the cage, or links overlap at the infeed or outfeed.

Belt tension or overdrive setting wrong
Check and adjust the take-up tension and the cage overdrive as the maker describes.
Worn belt links or rods
Inspect the belt and replace worn sections.
Ice on the rails or wear strips
Remove ice from the rails, and find where the moisture is coming from.
Worn cage bars or wear strips
Replace worn cage bars and wear strips.

Prevention: Belt and rail inspection during each sanitation shift.

Belt drive tripping on overload

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The drive motor trips or the belt stops under load.

Ice build-up adding drag
Defrost and remove ice from the belt path before restarting.
Belt caught on a damaged rail or guard
Walk the belt path with the freezer stopped and safe, and free any snag.
Lubrication missing on the drive or bearings
Lubricate with food grade lubricant suited to low temperatures.
Drive settings changed
Check the drive and overdrive settings against the commissioning values.

Prevention: Drive current trended so rising drag is seen before a trip.

Product sticking to the belt

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Product tears or leaves marks when it comes off the belt.

Belt wet or dirty at the infeed
Make sure the belt is clean and dry before product loads on it.
Product too wet when loaded
Drain or chill product before the freezer.
Belt type not suited to the product
Check the belt surface with the supplier for sticky products.
Product placed too close together
Space products so they do not freeze together.

Prevention: Belt condition checked at start-up after sanitation.

Fans vibrating or tripping

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: A fan vibrates, is noisy or trips its motor protection.

Ice on the fan blades unbalancing the fan
Defrost and remove ice from the blades.
Fan motor bearings worn
Replace the bearings or the motor.
Fan guard or ring iced up
Clear ice from the guard and ring.
Defrost not reaching the fans
Check the defrost covers the fan area.

Prevention: Fan vibration and current checked on the maintenance round.

Uneven freezing across the belt

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Products on one side of the belt are warmer than on the other.

Airflow uneven across the belt
Check fans, baffles and air guides are in place and working.
Product loaded unevenly
Spread product evenly across the belt width.
Evaporator iced more on one side
Defrost and check the refrigerant feed to the coil.
Baffles moved during cleaning
Put baffles back in their marked positions after sanitation.

Prevention: Core temperatures checked at both edges and the centre of the belt.

Sanitation taking too long

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Cleaning the freezer overruns the planned sanitation window.

Ice and debris left from the run
Run a full defrost before cleaning starts.
Spray nozzles blocked on the cleaning system
Clean or replace blocked nozzles.
Drains blocked
Clear the floor and drip tray drains.
Cleaning steps not standardised
Write the cleaning sequence down and time each step.

Prevention: Sanitation time recorded per clean and reviewed weekly.

Refrigerant leak alarm

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The gas detector alarms near the freezer or the plant room.

Leak at a valve, flange or coil
Follow the site emergency plan: leave the area, ventilate and let only trained and equipped staff find the leak.
Seal or gland worn on a valve
Have valve seals and glands inspected on the refrigeration maintenance plan.
Damage to the coil from ice or cleaning
Protect coils during ice removal and cleaning.
Gas detector out of calibration
Calibrate gas detectors on the schedule the maker sets, so alarms can be trusted.

Prevention: Gas detectors tested and refrigeration joints inspected on a fixed schedule.

Guidance only. Always follow lockout/tagout and your site's safe-work procedures, and verify against OEM manuals before acting.

Stop the same fault coming back

Recurring spiral freezer stops usually trace to a cause you cannot see by hand. The partner we recommend is Fabrico: it tracks OEE and downtime live from PLCs, IoT sensors or AI cameras; where cameras are fitted, the video of a stop sits next to its machine data so the cause can be reviewed; and a technician opens the work order from the stop in the same system. Data is hosted in the AWS EU region, and Fabrico and the company behind it hold ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO 9001.
