Problems on this page:

End breaks too high

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Yarn ends break more often than usual, and spinners cannot keep up with piecing.

Travellers worn or the wrong weight
Change travellers on the schedule set for the count, and check the traveller number for the yarn.
Room humidity or temperature off
Check the spinning room climate against the setting for the fibre.
Roving quality poor
Check the roving from the speed frame for thin places and evenness.
Spindle speed too high for the count
Reduce the spindle speed and compare the break rate.

Prevention: End breaks per thousand spindle hours recorded per frame.

Yarn count varying

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Count tests show the yarn is heavier or lighter than the specification.

Draft gear or setting wrong
Check the draft settings against the specification for the count.
Roving hank varying
Check the roving count from the speed frame.
Top roller pressure uneven
Check the pressure on the drafting arms across the frame.
Roving from different lots mixed
Keep lots separate at the creel.

Prevention: Count tested on samples from each frame.

Yarn evenness poor

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Evenness tests show more thin places, thick places or neps than the limit.

Top roller cots worn or grooved
Buff or replace the cots on the interval the mill sets for them.
Aprons worn or cracked
Replace worn aprons and check the apron cradles for damage.
Drafting zone roller settings wrong
Check the roller settings against the staple length of the fibre.
Fibre lapping on the rollers
Check the room humidity and clean the drafting zone.

Prevention: Evenness tested on samples from each frame.

Spindles running slow or noisy

Hits OEE: Performance

Symptoms: Some spindles run slower than the rest or make noise, and the twist in their yarn varies.

Spindle tapes worn or slipping
Check the tapes and replace worn or stretched ones.
Spindle bearings dry or worn
Lubricate or replace the spindle inserts as the maker specifies.
Tape tension pulleys worn
Check the tension pulleys and their bearings.
Spindle not centred to the ring
Centre the spindle to the ring with a centring gauge.

Prevention: Spindle speed checked with a tachometer on a sample of spindles.

Hairiness too high

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Hairiness tests show the yarn is hairier than usual.

Travellers worn
Change the travellers on the schedule set for the count.
Rings worn
Check the rings and replace worn ones.
Spindle speed too high
Reduce the speed and compare the hairiness result.
Room humidity too low
Check the spinning room climate.

Prevention: Hairiness tested on samples from each frame.

Doffing problems

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The automatic doffer misses bobbins, drops them or damages them.

Empty tubes damaged
Remove damaged tubes from circulation.
Doffer settings out of adjustment
Adjust the doffer height and grip as the maker specifies.
Sensors dirty with fluff
Clean the doffer sensors.
Air pressure low at the doffer
Check the air supply.

Prevention: Doff faults recorded per frame.

Suction and fluff build-up

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Fluff builds up on the frame and causes end breaks and quality faults.

Suction at the drafting zone weak
Check the suction fan, the filter and the suction tubes at each spindle.
Travelling cleaner stopped
Repair the travelling cleaner and check its rail.
Filter box full
Empty the filter box on schedule.
Suction ducts blocked
Clean the ducts.

Prevention: Frame cleaning checked each shift.

Drive or inverter faults

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The main drive of the frame trips on a fault.

Drive overheating
Check the drive fans and filters.
Parameter changed
Compare the parameters with the saved backup.
Supply dips
Record the supply when the trips happen.
Motor or cable fault
Test the motor and cable insulation with them isolated.

Prevention: Drive faults logged.

Stop the same fault coming back

Recurring ring spinning frame stops usually trace to a cause you cannot see by hand. The partner we recommend is Fabrico: it tracks OEE and downtime live from PLCs, IoT sensors or AI cameras; where cameras are fitted, the video of a stop sits next to its machine data so the cause can be reviewed; and a technician opens the work order from the stop in the same system. Data is hosted in the AWS EU region, and Fabrico and the company behind it hold ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO 9001.
