Problems on this page:

Neps in the sliver

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Nep counts in the card sliver are above the limit.

Card clothing worn or damaged
Check the wire on the cylinder, flats and doffer, and grind or replace it on the plan the maker gives.
Settings between cylinder and flats wrong
Check the gauges between cylinder, flats and doffer with feeler gauges.
Production rate too high for the fibre
Reduce the production rate and compare the nep count.
Fibre feed uneven
Check the chute feed and the feed roller.

Prevention: Nep counts measured on each card at a fixed interval.

Sliver weight varying

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: The sliver count, or weight per metre, varies outside the limits.

Autoleveller not working or not calibrated
Check the autoleveller calibration against a weighed sample.
Chute feed pressure unstable
Check the chute fan and its pressure control.
Feed roller drive or sensor problem
Check the feed roller drive and the sensor that measures the batt.
Draft settings changed
Compare the running settings with the approved settings for the count.

Prevention: Sliver weight checked each shift.

Web breaking or sagging at the doffer

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The web breaks or sags between the doffer and the crush rolls, and the card stops.

Room humidity too low or too high
Check the humidity in the card room against the setting for the fibre.
Doffer clothing worn
Check and grind or replace the doffer wire.
Draft between doffer and crush rolls wrong
Check the tension draft setting.
Static electricity on synthetic fibre
Check the fibre finish and humidity.

Prevention: Web breaks recorded per card.

Too much waste

Hits OEE: Performance

Symptoms: The card takes more good fibre out with the waste than usual.

Mote knife or licker-in settings wrong
Check and reset the settings under the licker-in.
Flat speed too high for the fibre
Check the flat speed against the setting for the fibre.
Waste suction too strong
Check the suction settings at the waste points.
Bale mix changed
Check the bale mix and fibre quality against the plan.

Prevention: Waste percentage checked weekly per card.

Card choking or lapping

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Fibre wraps around a roller or chokes the card, and it has to be stopped and cleared.

Feed too heavy
Check the chute feed and the batt weight.
Damaged clothing holding fibre
Repair or replace damaged wire.
Room humidity wrong for the fibre
Check the card room climate.
Suction ducts blocked
Clean the ducts and the filter of the suction system.

Prevention: Choke events recorded per card; clear chokes only with the card stopped and isolated.

Cylinder or doffer bearing problems

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Cylinder, licker-in or doffer bearings run hot or noisy.

Greasing missed or overdone
Grease the bearings on the schedule, with the amount the maker specifies.
Fibre dust in the bearing housing
Clean the housing and check the seals.
Belt tension too high
Check the belt tension of the main drives.
Bearing at the end of its life
Plan the bearing change for the next stop.

Prevention: Bearing temperatures checked weekly.

Coiler or can changer faults

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The automatic can changer stops, or sliver blocks in the coiler.

Can sensor dirty or misaligned
Clean and align the can sensor.
Coiler tube blocked with fibre
Clean the coiler tube and the trumpet.
Damaged cans jamming the changer
Take damaged cans out of use.
Changer drive fault
Check the changer motor and its drive.

Prevention: Can changer faults recorded.

Clothing grinding overdue

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Nep counts and waste drift up because the card wire is not ground on schedule.

No grinding plan per card
Set a grinding interval per card based on the fibre and production.
Grinding not recorded
Record each grind with the date and the production since the last one.
Grinding equipment not available
Plan the grinder time across the cards.
Grinding method inconsistent
Write the method down and train the staff who grind.

Prevention: Grinding recorded per card.

Stop the same fault coming back

Recurring carding machine stops usually trace to a cause you cannot see by hand. The partner we recommend is Fabrico: it tracks OEE and downtime live from PLCs, IoT sensors or AI cameras; where cameras are fitted, the video of a stop sits next to its machine data so the cause can be reviewed; and a technician opens the work order from the stop in the same system. Data is hosted in the AWS EU region, and Fabrico and the company behind it hold ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO 9001.
