Problems on this page:

Router bits breaking

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Bits snap during cutting and the machine stops.

Feed rate too high for the bit
Reduce the feed rate to the value the bit maker gives for the board thickness.
Bit worn past its life
Change bits by cut length rather than waiting for breakage.
Board not supported by the fixture
Check that the fixture supports the board near every cut.
Spindle runout
Check the spindle and the collet.

Prevention: Bit life tracked by cut length.

Dust left on the boards

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Routing dust stays on boards and components.

Extraction too weak at the cut
Check the extraction nozzle position and the extractor filter.
Extraction from below blocked
Clean the lower extraction.
Static holding dust on the board
Use ionisation where needed.
Bit worn and making fine dust
Change the bit before it wears enough to make fine dust.

Prevention: Board cleanliness checked on samples.

Rough board edges

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Cut edges are rough or show fibres.

Bit worn
Change the bit.
Spindle speed wrong
Set the speed for the bit.
Feed too fast
Reduce the feed.
Board vibrating in the fixture
Support the board.

Prevention: Edge quality checked on the first boards.

Stress damage to components near the cut

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Cracked capacitors or solder joints are found near the routed edges.

Board flexing during routing
Add fixture support near components.
Bit pushing the board
Reduce the feed so the bit does not push the board.
Components too close to the route
Raise this with the board designers.
Handling after routing
Check the handling method.

Prevention: Inspection of edge components on new products.

Cut position errors

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Cuts are offset from the outline and boards are out of size.

Fiducials not recognised
Clean the camera and check the fiducial settings.
Panel not seated in the fixture
Check the locating pins.
Axis calibration drifted
Run the calibration.
Program for the wrong revision
Check the program revision.

Prevention: First board measured after each changeover.

Spindle problems

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The spindle overheats, is noisy, or will not reach speed.

Bearings worn
Have the spindle serviced.
Cooling air or water fault
Check the spindle cooling.
Collet dirty
Clean the collet.
Drive fault
Check the spindle drive.

Prevention: Spindle running hours tracked.

Fixture worn

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Boards sit loosely and cut quality varies.

Support pins worn
Replace the pins.
Fixture damaged by the bit
Repair or replace the fixture.
Wrong fixture used
Mark fixtures by product.
Vacuum hold-down weak
Check the vacuum.

Prevention: Fixture inspection at each changeover.

Boards mixed up after routing

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Single boards from different panels or revisions get mixed.

No separation between lots
Clear the output area at each lot change.
Boards not marked
Check the board marking.
Rework boards returned to the wrong lot
Control rework flow.
Output tray shared between products
Use separate trays.

Prevention: Lot change clearance signed off.

Routing taking too long

Hits OEE: Performance

Symptoms: Cycle time per panel rises and the router becomes the bottleneck of the line.

Feed rate set lower than the bit allows
Use the feed rate the bit maker gives for the board, and review it when the board material changes.
Inefficient tool path
Optimise the path order and reduce empty moves between cuts.
Frequent bit changes from early wear
Fix the cause of wear instead of slowing the feed.
Manual loading and unloading
Prepare the next panel while the current one is routed.

Prevention: Cycle time per panel recorded per product.

Burrs or fibres on the routed edge

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Glass fibres or burrs stick out from the edges and catch on housings.

Bit geometry not suited to the board
Use a bit designed for the board material and thickness.
Routing direction wrong
Check the climb or conventional routing direction the bit maker recommends.
Bit worn
Change the bit by cut length.
Spindle speed too low
Raise the speed to the bit maker value.

Prevention: Edge checked by feel and under magnification on new products.

Stop the same fault coming back

Recurring depaneling router stops usually trace to a cause you cannot see by hand. The partner we recommend is Fabrico: it tracks OEE and downtime live from PLCs, IoT sensors or AI cameras; where cameras are fitted, the video of a stop sits next to its machine data so the cause can be reviewed; and a technician opens the work order from the stop in the same system. Data is hosted in the AWS EU region, and Fabrico and the company behind it hold ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO 9001.
