Problems on this page:

Crates not clean after washing

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Inspection finds dirt, product residue or labels left on the crates.

Wash water temperature too low
Check the tank heating and its sensor and keep the temperature at the set value.
Detergent concentration low
Check the dosing pump and the detergent supply.
Spray nozzles blocked
Clean the nozzles and the filters in front of them.
Conveyor speed too fast for the soil
Slow the conveyor for heavily soiled crates.

Prevention: Wash temperature and detergent concentration recorded every shift.

Crates jamming in the machine

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Crates stop, turn or stack up inside the washer.

Guides set for a different crate size
Set the guides for the crate being washed.
Damaged crates entering
Remove broken crates before the washer.
Conveyor chain worn or loose
Check the chain tension and wear.
Crates entering too close together
Space the crates at the infeed.

Prevention: Guide settings by crate type on the changeover sheet.

Crates leaving wet

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Water stays in the crates after the drying section.

Blow-off fan weak or filter blocked
Clean the fan intake filter and check the fan.
Air knives set wrong
Adjust the air knife angle and distance.
Final rinse too cold
Check the rinse temperature, as warm crates dry faster.
Crates entering the dryer upside down
Check the orientation at the infeed.

Prevention: Crate dryness checked at the start of each run.

Wash tank water dirty quickly

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: The tank water gets heavily soiled early in the shift.

Pre-rinse not removing loose soil
Check the pre-rinse sprays and their water supply.
Filter baskets full
Empty the filter baskets more often.
Overflow not working
Check the overflow and fresh water top-up.
Very dirty crates from the field
Pre-clean heavily soiled crates.

Prevention: Tank change frequency set by soil level and recorded.

Heating too slow or failing

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The washer takes too long to reach temperature at start-up.

Heater element failed
Check the elements and their contactors.
Steam supply problem
Check the steam valve, traps and pressure.
Scale on the heaters
Descale and treat the water.
Tank lid or curtains left open
Keep covers closed during heat-up.

Prevention: Heat-up time recorded at each start.

Foaming in the tank

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Foam overflows the tank or reduces spray pressure.

Wrong detergent for the spray machine
Use a low-foam detergent made for spray washers.
Product residue such as protein
Check the pre-rinse and the soil.
Detergent overdosed
Check the dosing.
Water temperature too low for the detergent
Run at the temperature the supplier specifies.

Prevention: Detergent choice reviewed with the supplier when the soil changes.

Labels and stickers not removed

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Labels stay on crates or pieces block the filters.

Label adhesive not water soluble
Use washable labels where crates are reused.
Temperature or contact time too low
Increase temperature or slow the conveyor.
Label removal sprays blocked
Clean the high pressure sprays.
Label pulp blocking filters
Empty filters more often.

Prevention: Label spec agreed with the supply chain for returnable crates.

Conveyor chain or drive faults

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The conveyor stops, jerks or the drive trips.

Chain stretched
Measure elongation and replace the chain.
Sprockets worn
Replace sprockets with the chain.
Drive overloaded by a jam
Clear the jam and check the guides.
Chain lubrication missing
Use the food grade lubricant specified.

Prevention: Chain wear measured at the planned service.

Stop the same fault coming back

Recurring crate washer stops usually trace to a cause you cannot see by hand. The partner we recommend is Fabrico: it tracks OEE and downtime live from PLCs, IoT sensors or AI cameras; where cameras are fitted, the video of a stop sits next to its machine data so the cause can be reviewed; and a technician opens the work order from the stop in the same system. Data is hosted in the AWS EU region, and Fabrico and the company behind it hold ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO 9001.
