Problems on this page:

Low bale density or will not compress

Hits OEE: Performance

Symptoms: Loose bales, bales fall apart, low bale weight, cycle finishes without full compaction.

Low hydraulic pressure
Check the relief-valve setting and pump output; test system pressure against spec.
Worn ram or platen seals
Rebuild the main cylinder; replace worn seals losing compaction force.
Overfilled or wrong material
Charge the correct volume; separate un-baleable or springy material.
Worn shear blade leaving overhang
Sharpen or replace the shear blade so the charge shears cleanly.

Prevention: System-pressure checks, cylinder and seal PM, blade sharpening schedule, feed control.

Ram will not advance or stalls mid-stroke

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Ram creeps or stops, motor runs but no motion, chattering under load.

Low oil or air in the hydraulics
Top up to spec, bleed trapped air, and check for a suction-side leak.
Failing pump or coupling
Test pump flow; inspect the pump-motor coupling for wear.
Stuck or faulty directional valve
Clean or replace the spool valve; check the shift solenoid.
Material jam ahead of the ram
Lock out and clear the jam; confirm the feed size is within limits.

Prevention: Oil level and quality checks, pump and valve PM, feed-size control, jam-clear SOP.

Wire or strap tie failures

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Broken or loose ties on ejection, bales bursting after ejection, missed ties.

Wire tension or twist set wrong
Adjust the tensioner and twist count; confirm the wire gauge matches spec.
Worn twist or gripper mechanism
Inspect and replace worn twister pinions and grippers.
Poor wire quality or rust
Use spec wire and keep it dry; rusty wire snaps under tension.
Needle timing off
Re-time the needles to the twister so the tie forms fully.

Prevention: Tie-mechanism PM, correct wire spec and storage, needle-timing checks.

Bale will not eject or jams at the door

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Door will not open, bale stuck in the chamber, eject cycle faults out.

Overfilled or oversized bale
Right-size the charge and cycle; do not overfill the chamber.
Door latch or eject-ram fault
Check the latch interlock and eject sequence; inspect the actuators.
Debris in the chamber rails
Lock out and clean the chamber and guide rails.
Low eject pressure
Check the eject-circuit relief and cylinder for internal leakage.

Prevention: Fill control, door-interlock testing, chamber cleaning, eject-circuit checks.

Hydraulic oil overheating

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Oil temperature alarms and a slow ram late in the shift.

Oil cooler fouled
Clean the cooler.
Oil flowing over the relief valve
Check that the pump unloads between strokes.
Low oil level
Top up and find the leak.

Prevention: Oil temperature checked on the route.

Gate interlock faults

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The baler will not cycle with the gate closed.

Interlock switch misaligned
Re-align the switch and its actuator.
Interlock switch damaged
Replace the switch.
Wiring fault
Check the wiring. Never bypass an interlock.

Prevention: Interlock tests every day.

Material spilling from the chamber

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Material falls out around the feed opening and onto the floor.

Chamber overfilled
Feed within the chamber capacity.
Worn flaps or retainers
Replace the flaps.
Shear blade worn
Replace the blade.

Prevention: Spillage checks on the route.

Bale weight varies widely

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Bale weights spread more than the buyer accepts.

Material mix or moisture changing
Check the incoming material.
Fill control settings
Check the settings that end the bale.
Density setting
Set the density for the material.

Prevention: Bale weights logged.

Stop the same fault coming back

Recurring baler stops usually trace to a cause you cannot see by hand. The partner we recommend is Fabrico: it tracks OEE and downtime live from PLCs, IoT sensors or AI cameras; where cameras are fitted, the video of a stop sits next to its machine data so the cause can be reviewed; and a technician opens the work order from the stop in the same system. Data is hosted in the AWS EU region, and Fabrico and the company behind it hold ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO 9001.
