Problems on this page:

Heavy burrs on punched holes

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Holes and nibbled edges have large burrs.

Punch dull
Sharpen the punch and record the hits.
Die clearance wrong for the thickness
Use the die clearance for the material and thickness.
Punch and die misaligned
Check the station alignment.

Prevention: Punch sharpening by hit count.

Slug pulling

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Slugs come back up with the punch and land on the sheet.

Die clearance too tight
Increase the clearance to the correct value.
Punch magnetised
Demagnetise the punch.
Lubricant or vacuum causing suction
Use slug-retention dies or adjust the lubrication.
Punch not entering the die far enough
Check the punch penetration setting.

Prevention: Slug control dies used on stations known for slug pulling.

Sheet slipping in the clamps

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: The sheet shifts and holes are out of position.

Clamp pads worn
Replace the clamp pads.
Clamp pressure low
Check the clamp air or hydraulic pressure.
Sheet not seated against the stops
Check the sheet loading.

Prevention: Clamp pads inspected weekly.

Hole positions out of tolerance

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Holes are in the wrong place compared with the drawing.

Axis calibration drift
Calibrate the axes.
Sheet slipping
Fix the clamping.
Repositioning errors on long sheets
Check the repositioning sequence.

Prevention: Test sheet checked monthly.

Tool breakage or galling

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Punches break or pick up material.

Punch too small for the thickness
Check the punch size against the material.
Lubrication missing
Lubricate the tools as specified.
Stripping force too high
Check the stripper springs.

Prevention: Tool condition checked at tool change.

Turret index faults

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The turret fails to index or lock in position.

Index pin worn
Replace the pin and bushings.
Sensor fault
Check the index sensors.
Drive fault
Check the turret drive.

Prevention: Index mechanism checked at the quarterly PM.

Sheet distortion near dense punching

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Areas with many holes bulge or the sheet curls.

Punching sequence concentrates stress
Change the sequence to spread the holes.
Nibbling pitch too small
Adjust the nibbling pitch.
Material stress
Check the sheet flatness.

Prevention: Programs for dense patterns reviewed before release.

Noise and shock on stripping

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The press makes a loud bang on stripping and tools wear faster.

Stripper springs weak
Replace the springs.
Punch penetration too deep
Reduce the penetration.
Dull punches
Sharpen the punches.

Prevention: Spring and punch condition on the tool maintenance schedule.

Parts not separating from the skeleton

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Finished parts stay attached to the skeleton and need breaking out by hand.

Microjoints too large for the material
Reduce the microjoint size in the program.
Parting tool worn
Sharpen or replace the parting punch.
Part trap door or chute faults
Check the part removal door and its sensors.

Prevention: Microjoint sizes set per material in the programming system.

Forming tools making poor forms

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Louvres, embosses or extrusions are too shallow, too deep, cracked or uneven.

Form height setting wrong
Set the stroke or form height for the tool and the material thickness.
Material thickness varies
Check the sheet thickness and adjust the setting for the lot.
Forming tool not lubricated
Lubricate the forming tool as the tooling maker specifies.
Upform tool striking the sheet during moves
Plan forming last or use retractable tools so finished forms are not hit.

Prevention: First-off form check with a gauge on every new program and lot.

Scratches on the underside of the sheet

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: The bottom face of parts is scratched or marked after punching.

Brush or ball tables worn
Replace worn brushes or seized balls on the support tables.
Die sitting above the table height
Set the die height level with the table.
Slugs or debris on the table
Clean the table and fix slug handling.
Sheet dragged with clamps not lifted
Check that the sheet is supported during fast moves.

Prevention: Table condition checked at the weekly PM.

Stop the same fault coming back

Recurring turret punch press stops usually trace to a cause you cannot see by hand. The partner we recommend is Fabrico: it tracks OEE and downtime live from PLCs, IoT sensors or AI cameras; where cameras are fitted, the video of a stop sits next to its machine data so the cause can be reviewed; and a technician opens the work order from the stop in the same system. Data is hosted in the AWS EU region, and Fabrico and the company behind it hold ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO 9001.
