Problems on this page:

Strap does not feed into the arch

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The machine cycles but no strap goes round the arch, or it stops part way round.

Feed wheels worn or dirty
Clean or replace the feed and retract wheels so they grip the strap.
Strap curled from the coil
Check the dispenser brake and the strap storage, and replace a badly curled coil.
Arch guides dirty or misaligned
Clean the strap track and realign the arch sections.
Wrong strap width or thickness
Use the strap size the machine is set up for.

Prevention: Strap track cleaning and feed wheel checks on the weekly round.

Loose straps

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Straps sit loose around the pack and slide off or let the load move.

Tension set too low
Raise the tension setting for the pack size and weight.
Tension wheel worn
Replace the tension wheel so it grips the strap.
Strap slipping in the seal head before welding
Clean the gripper and check it closes fully.
Pack compressing after strapping
Use edge protectors or a compression plate for soft packs.

Prevention: Strap tension checked on the first pack of each product.

Weak or failed seal

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: The strap joint pulls apart by hand or breaks on the pallet.

Heater temperature too low or too high
Set the heater for the strap material and check it with the maker procedure.
Melted strap on the heater blade
Clean the heater blade with the tool the maker supplies.
Weld pressure or dwell time too short
Increase the dwell time so the joint cools under pressure.
Strap material not matched to the machine
Use strap of the type and grade the seal head is designed for.

Prevention: A pull test on a sample joint at each shift start.

Strap jams in the arch or seal head

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The strap folds inside the track, or the head locks with strap trapped in it.

Strap debris in the seal head
Clear and clean the head and remove any strap chips.
Arch gate not opening fully
Check the gate springs and free the gate.
Feed timing too fast for the arch size
Reset the feed length or timing for the arch.
Coil end not detected
Check the end-of-coil sensor so the machine stops before the tail enters the head.

Prevention: Seal head cleaned at each coil change.

Strap not cut or cut ragged

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The strap stays joined to the coil after sealing, or the cut end catches on the next cycle.

Worn cutter blade
Replace the cutter and the anvil if it is damaged.
Cutter timing out of adjustment
Reset the cam or timing for the cut.
Strap too thick for the cutter
Check the strap size against the machine rating.

Prevention: Cutter inspected at the monthly PM.

Coil dispenser tangling or overrunning

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The coil spins on after the feed stops, strap loops on the floor, or the strap snags.

Dispenser brake worn or set too light
Adjust or replace the brake so the coil stops with the feed.
Coil loaded the wrong way round
Load the coil so the strap leaves in the direction shown on the dispenser.
Strap guide rollers missing or seized
Fit and free the guide rollers.

Prevention: Coil loading shown on a label fixed to the dispenser.

Heater slow to heat or not heating

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The machine waits for temperature or makes cold, unsealed joints.

Heater element failed
Replace the element and check its connections.
Temperature sensor faulty
Replace the sensor and check the reading against a test thermometer.
Loose wiring to the heater
Tighten and inspect the connections, which suffer from heat and vibration.

Prevention: A spare heater and sensor kept on the line.

Pack crushed or marked by the strap

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: The strap cuts into the cases or crushes the top layer.

Tension too high for the pack
Reduce the tension setting for that product.
No edge protection
Add corner boards on soft or printed packs.
Strap too narrow for the load
Use a wider strap to spread the force.

Prevention: Tension settings by product on the changeover sheet.

Stop the same fault coming back

Recurring strapping machine stops usually trace to a cause you cannot see by hand. The partner we recommend is Fabrico: it tracks OEE and downtime live from PLCs, IoT sensors or AI cameras; where cameras are fitted, the video of a stop sits next to its machine data so the cause can be reviewed; and a technician opens the work order from the stop in the same system. Data is hosted in the AWS EU region, and Fabrico and the company behind it hold ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO 9001.
