Problems on this page:

Fabric width off target

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Finished fabric is wider or narrower than the specification.

Rail width set wrong for the fabric
Set the rail width from the recipe and check it at the exit with a tape.
Fabric shrinking more than expected
Check the fabric shrinkage on a sample and adjust the width setting.
Overfeed setting wrong
Check the overfeed, which also changes the final width.
Width sensor or display wrong
Compare the display with a measured width.

Prevention: Width measured at the exit on every roll.

Weft bowing or skew

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: The weft yarns run in a curve or at an angle across the fabric.

Weft straightener not set or not working
Check the straightener sensors and rollers.
Overfeed different on each side
Set the overfeed evenly on both sides.
Fabric entering the stenter skewed
Check the fabric guiding before the entry.
Chain speed different on each side
Check that both chains run at the same speed.

Prevention: Weft straightness checked on samples from each roll.

Fabric falling off the pins or clips

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The fabric edge drops off the pins or clips and the line stops.

Fabric edge curling
Check the edge uncurlers and set them for the fabric.
Edge guiding sensors dirty
Clean the edge sensors.
Pin plates or clips worn
Replace worn pin plates and clips.
Width set too wide for the fabric
Reduce the entry width.

Prevention: Pin plates and clips inspected on a fixed schedule.

Uneven drying or curing

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Moisture or finish varies across the width or along the length.

Air nozzles blocked with lint
Clean the nozzles and filters on a fixed schedule.
Zone temperatures uneven
Check each zone temperature and the burner or heater controls.
Speed too high for the fabric
Reduce speed until the fabric dries evenly.
Circulation fan not running
Check every circulation fan.

Prevention: Fabric moisture checked at the exit.

Yellowing or shade change

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Fabric turns yellow or changes shade after the stenter.

Temperature too high
Check the temperature against the recipe.
Dwell time too long
Check the speed and the number of zones in use.
Burner combustion poor
Have the burners checked so exhaust gases do not stain the fabric.
Finishing chemicals reacting to heat
Check the chemical recipe with the supplier.

Prevention: Shade compared with the standard on each lot.

Oil stains from the chains

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Oil spots appear near the fabric edges.

Chain over-lubricated
Use the amount of lubricant the maker specifies.
Wrong lubricant for the temperature
Use the high temperature lubricant the maker specifies.
Chain guards or covers missing
Refit the covers that keep oil away from the fabric.
Lubrication system leaking
Repair leaks in the lubrication system.

Prevention: Chain lubrication checked at each shift.

Lint building up in the stenter

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Lint collects on filters, nozzles and heaters and the airflow drops.

Filters not cleaned often enough
Clean the filters on a fixed schedule, more often for fluffy fabrics.
Filter screens damaged
Replace damaged screens.
Lint left in hidden areas after cleaning
Include hidden areas in the cleaning checklist; lint near hot surfaces is a fire risk.
Exhaust fan running slow
Check the exhaust fan.

Prevention: Filter cleaning recorded; fire detection and suppression tested on schedule.

Smoke or fumes at the exit

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Smoke or strong fumes come out of the stenter or the exhaust stack.

Finishing chemicals volatilising
Check the chemical recipe and the temperature.
Exhaust fans not removing fumes
Check the exhaust fan and its ducting.
Oil from the fabric burning off
Check the fabric preparation before the stenter.
Exhaust cleaning unit overloaded
Check the exhaust air treatment where fitted.

Prevention: Exhaust condition checked daily.

Uneven chemical pick-up at the padder

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: The finish is stronger on one side or in patches.

Padder roller pressure uneven
Check the pressure on both sides of the padder.
Padder rollers worn
Have the rollers reground or replaced.
Trough level varying
Keep the trough level steady.
Fabric entering with uneven moisture
Check the fabric before the padder.

Prevention: Pick-up checked by weighing samples.

Stop the same fault coming back

Recurring stenter stops usually trace to a cause you cannot see by hand. The partner we recommend is Fabrico: it tracks OEE and downtime live from PLCs, IoT sensors or AI cameras; where cameras are fitted, the video of a stop sits next to its machine data so the cause can be reviewed; and a technician opens the work order from the stop in the same system. Data is hosted in the AWS EU region, and Fabrico and the company behind it hold ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO 9001.
