Problems on this page:

Valve does not switch

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The valve stays closed or open when the coil is switched.

No voltage at the coil
Measure the voltage at the coil connector.
Coil burnt out
Replace the coil.
Pressure difference too low for a pilot-operated valve
Check the valve's minimum pressure difference against the system.
Debris in the valve
Clean the valve and fit a strainer upstream.

Prevention: Strainers before valves on dirty media.

Coil overheating or burning out

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Coils fail repeatedly and run very hot.

Wrong coil voltage
Match the coil to the supply.
Plunger stuck so the coil cannot pull in
Clean or replace the plunger tube.
High ambient or media temperature
Use a coil rated for the temperature.
Duty cycle above the rating
Check the duty cycle.

Prevention: Coil temperatures checked on the route.

Valve leaks through when closed

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Media passes the valve when it should be shut.

Debris on the seat
Clean the seat.
Worn seal
Replace the seal kit.
Valve fitted against the flow direction
Check the flow arrow.
Back pressure higher than the valve allows
Check the system pressures.

Prevention: Seal kits replaced on a planned interval.

Humming or buzzing coil

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: An AC coil hums loudly or chatters.

Dirt in the plunger tube
Clean the tube.
Damaged shading ring
Replace the plunger tube assembly.
Supply voltage low
Check the voltage at the coil.

Prevention: Noisy valves reported and checked.

Slow response

Hits OEE: Performance

Symptoms: The valve opens or closes late.

Media too viscous for the valve
Use a valve suited to the media.
Low pressure difference
Check system pressures.
Restricted pilot passage
Clean the pilot passage.
Voltage drop on a long cable
Check the voltage at the coil while it switches.

Prevention: Response times checked on critical valves.

External leaks at the body or connections

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Drips or hissing at the valve body or fittings.

Body seal or gasket worn
Replace the seals.
Fittings loose or overtightened
Refit the fittings correctly.
Cracked body from freezing
Replace the valve and protect it from frost.

Prevention: Leak checks on the route.

Valve chattering

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The valve opens and closes rapidly.

Unstable supply voltage
Check the supply and the control output.
Pressure fluctuating around the valve threshold
Stabilise the pressure.
Valve type not suited to low pressure
Use a direct-acting valve where the pressure difference is low.

Prevention: Control outputs checked when a valve chatters.

Seals failing early

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Seals swell, harden or crack long before expected.

Seal material not suited to the media
Check the seal material against the media.
Temperature above the seal rating
Use seals rated for the temperature.
Cleaning chemicals attacking the seals
Check the cleaning chemicals against the seal material.

Prevention: Seal materials recorded per valve.

Valve sticking after standing idle

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: A valve that sat unused does not switch at first, then works after a few cycles.

Deposits from the media on the plunger
Clean the plunger and tube.
Seal sticking to the seat
Replace the seal and check its material.
Corrosion in the plunger tube
Use materials suited to the media and keep the air dry.
Valve never cycled during long stops
Cycle seldom-used valves on a schedule.

Prevention: Seldom-used valves cycled during planned checks.

Stop the same fault coming back

Recurring solenoid valve stops usually trace to a cause you cannot see by hand. The partner we recommend is Fabrico: it tracks OEE and downtime live from PLCs, IoT sensors or AI cameras; where cameras are fitted, the video of a stop sits next to its machine data so the cause can be reviewed; and a technician opens the work order from the stop in the same system. Data is hosted in the AWS EU region, and Fabrico and the company behind it hold ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO 9001.
