Problems on this page:

Faint or incomplete marks

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: The code is light, broken, or missing parts of characters.

Dirty lens or protective window
Clean the window with the maker method and replace it if it is pitted.
Power or mark speed wrong for the material
Set the parameters for each packaging material and save them with the job.
Focus distance changed
Check the distance from the lens to the pack and reset it.
Packaging material changed
Run a test mark whenever a new material or supplier is used.

Prevention: Window cleaning on the daily checklist.

Marks stretched or distorted

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Characters are stretched, squashed or slanted along the direction of travel.

Line speed not matched to the coder
Use an encoder on the conveyor instead of a fixed speed setting.
Product moving or rotating under the head
Guide the product so it passes steady and square.
Mark field at an angle to the product
Square the head to the product flow.

Prevention: Mark checked at the top and bottom of the speed range.

Laser does not fire

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The coder shows ready but no mark appears, or it shows an interlock fault.

Safety interlock open
Check the guard, the beam shield and the interlock circuit.
Shutter closed or key switch off
Check the shutter state and the key switch.
No print trigger
Check the product sensor and its wiring.
Laser source fault
Read the controller fault log and call the service partner.

Prevention: Interlocks tested at each PM so a fault is found before the line needs the coder.

Mark burns through or damages the pack

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: The laser cuts through the film or label, or leaves a scorched area.

Power too high for the material
Reduce the power or increase the mark speed.
Product stopped under the head
Stop the mark if the conveyor stops.
Laser type not suited to the material
Check with the supplier that the wavelength suits the packaging.

Prevention: Mark settings validated for each material and locked in the job.

Overheating or cooling fault

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The coder stops on a temperature alarm, often on hot days.

Air filters clogged
Clean or replace the cooling air filters.
Cooling fan failed
Replace the fan.
Room temperature above the coder rating
Improve ventilation around the cabinet or move it away from heat sources.

Prevention: Filter cleaning on the monthly PM, more often in dusty areas.

Fume extraction not working

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Smoke builds up at the mark point and the lens gets dirty quickly.

Extractor filter full
Replace the extractor filters as the maker specifies.
Extraction nozzle too far from the mark
Move the nozzle close to the mark point.
Hose blocked or crushed
Check the hose and clear it.

Prevention: Extractor filter changes logged with the date.

Code position drifts

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: The code moves along or across the pack during a run.

Product sensor dirty or moved
Clean and refix the sensor.
Coder mount vibrating
Stiffen the mount and isolate it from conveyor vibration.
Conveyor speed varying
Use an encoder input so the coder follows the speed.

Prevention: Mount and sensor checks on the weekly round.

Wrong data in the code

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: The date, batch or line number on the pack is wrong.

Wrong job selected at changeover
Select jobs from the production order rather than by hand.
Coder clock wrong
Synchronise the coder clock with the plant time source.
Data link to the line system lost
Check the network link and the message the line system sends.

Prevention: The first code of each batch checked and signed off.

Guidance only. Always follow lockout/tagout and your site's safe-work procedures, and verify against OEM manuals before acting.

Stop the same fault coming back

Recurring laser coder stops usually trace to a cause you cannot see by hand. The partner we recommend is Fabrico: it tracks OEE and downtime live from PLCs, IoT sensors or AI cameras; where cameras are fitted, the video of a stop sits next to its machine data so the cause can be reviewed; and a technician opens the work order from the stop in the same system. Data is hosted in the AWS EU region, and Fabrico and the company behind it hold ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO 9001.
