Problems on this page:

Room humidity above setpoint

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: The dry room or process area does not reach the humidity it needs, and product quality is at risk.

Desiccant wheel saturated because reactivation is not working
Check the reactivation heater, its airflow and the temperature leaving the wheel.
Room leaking moist air in
Check doors, airlocks and wall penetrations, and the room pressure.
Moisture load higher than design
Check new moisture sources such as more people, open processes or washdown.
Humidity sensor out of calibration
Check the room sensor against a calibrated reference.

Prevention: Room humidity trended and alarmed against the product limit.

Desiccant wheel not turning

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The wheel stops, and the unit loses its drying capacity within minutes.

Drive belt broken or slipping
Check and replace the wheel drive belt.
Drive motor or gearbox failed
Check the motor and gearbox.
Rotation sensor fault
Check the rotation sensor so the alarm works.
Wheel seals binding
Check the wheel seals and their adjustment.

Prevention: Wheel rotation alarm tested on the maintenance plan.

Reactivation heater faults

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The reactivation heater trips or does not reach temperature.

Heater element failed
Test the elements with the unit isolated.
Reactivation airflow too low, tripping the high limit
Check the reactivation fan and filter.
Gas burner fault on gas-fired units
Check the burner and its flame detection.
Temperature sensor fault
Check the sensor.

Prevention: Reactivation temperature logged.

Filters blocking quickly

Hits OEE: Performance

Symptoms: Process and reactivation filters load up fast, and airflow through the wheel drops.

Dusty air from the process or the outside
Find the source of the dust and add extraction at the source where possible.
Filter grade wrong for the duty
Check the filter class against the maker specification.
Pre-filters missing
Fit coarse pre-filters ahead of the main filters.
Air bypassing leaking filter frames
Check the frames and seals so all air passes through the filter.

Prevention: Filter pressure drop checked weekly.

Energy use too high

Hits OEE: Performance

Symptoms: The unit uses more energy than before to hold the same room conditions.

Reactivation running at full power at low load
Check that the reactivation output follows the moisture load.
Room leaking moist air in
Seal doors, penetrations and airlocks.
Pre-cooling coil not working
Check the chilled water to the pre-cooling coil.
Desiccant wheel contaminated
Have the wheel condition checked by the maker.

Prevention: Energy use trended monthly against the room conditions.

Condensation in ducts

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Water collects in the ducts or drips from them.

Duct insulation missing or damaged
Insulate the ducts that carry cold or humid air.
Cold surfaces in a humid space
Check where cold ducts pass through warm, humid areas.
Wet reactivation exhaust cooling in the duct
Insulate the reactivation exhaust duct and slope it to a drain.
Duct joints leaking
Seal leaking joints.

Prevention: Ducts inspected for condensation on a fixed schedule.

Fan faults

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The process or reactivation fan trips, vibrates or gets noisy.

Fan bearings worn
Check bearing temperature and vibration and plan the change.
Belts worn or loose
Check belt tension and wear.
Impeller out of balance from dirt
Clean the impeller with the unit isolated and locked off.
Motor fault
Test the motor insulation and check its protection settings.

Prevention: Fans checked on the maintenance plan.

Controls not holding setpoint

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Room humidity swings above and below the setpoint even though the unit has enough capacity.

Control loop badly tuned
Tune the humidity control loop.
Sensor placed in a poor spot
Move the sensor away from doors and supply air outlets.
Bypass or face damper sticking
Service the damper and its actuator.
Settings changed
Compare the controller settings with the commissioning record.

Prevention: Humidity trend reviewed weekly.

Stop the same fault coming back

Recurring industrial dehumidifier stops usually trace to a cause you cannot see by hand. The partner we recommend is Fabrico: it tracks OEE and downtime live from PLCs, IoT sensors or AI cameras; where cameras are fitted, the video of a stop sits next to its machine data so the cause can be reviewed; and a technician opens the work order from the stop in the same system. Data is hosted in the AWS EU region, and Fabrico and the company behind it hold ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO 9001.
