Problems on this page:

Throughput dropping

Hits OEE: Performance

Symptoms: The mill passes less material per hour than usual at the same settings.

Screen blinded or plugged
Clean the screen and check the material moisture.
Hammers worn
Turn or replace the hammers as a full set.
Feed uneven
Check the feeder gives a steady flow across the rotor width.
Airflow through the mill too low
Check the fan, filters and ducting of the air system.

Prevention: Throughput and motor load recorded per product.

Particles too coarse

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: The ground product is coarser than the specification.

Screen worn or torn
Inspect the screen and replace it if holes are worn or torn.
Wrong screen fitted
Check the screen size for the product.
Hammers worn
Replace or turn the hammers.
Rotor speed lower than set
Check the motor speed and drive.

Prevention: Particle size tested on samples each shift.

Vibration

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The mill shakes, the bearings run hot or the vibration alarm trips.

Hammers missing or out of balance
Fit hammers in matched weight sets and replace a full set at a time.
Rotor bearing worn
Check bearing temperature and condition.
Foreign object inside the mill
Stop, isolate and inspect the mill chamber.
Base or mounting bolts loose
Check and tighten the mounting.

Prevention: Vibration trended on the bearings.

Mill choking and tripping

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The motor overloads and the mill fills up and stops.

Feed rate too high
Control the feed from the motor load.
Screen blinded
Clean the screen.
Moist or sticky material
Check moisture before milling.
Air system not removing product
Check the fan and the outlet.

Prevention: Feed linked to the motor load where the controls allow.

Hot mill or burning smell

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The mill housing or product is hot, or there is a burning smell.

Material rubbing in a choked mill
Stop the feed and clear the mill; fine dust and heat together are an explosion risk.
Bearings overheating
Check the bearing lubrication and condition.
Hammers rubbing on the screen
Check hammer to screen clearance.
Tramp metal sparking
Check the magnets ahead of the mill.

Prevention: Bearing and housing temperatures checked on the round; explosion protection inspected on its schedule.

Damage from tramp metal

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Bolts, nails or metal parts break hammers or screens.

Magnet missing or not cleaned
Clean the magnets ahead of the mill every shift.
No separator for the material source
Fit a magnet or separator suited to the incoming material.
Metal parts loose upstream
Inspect upstream equipment for loose parts.
Bags and packaging fragments in the feed
Check how raw material is tipped.

Prevention: Metal caught by magnets recorded to find the source.

Dust leaking from the mill

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Dust escapes at the doors, seals or outlet.

Door seals worn
Replace the door seals.
Mill not under negative pressure
Check the fan and filter of the air system.
Filter bags blinded
Clean or replace filter bags.
Outlet connections loose
Check the outlet clamps and flexible connections.

Prevention: Dust around the mill checked on the round.

Hammers wearing quickly

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Hammers need replacing much more often than before.

Abrasive material
Use hard-faced hammers for abrasive products.
Hammers not turned
Turn hammers to use all their edges.
Sand or stones in the feed
Clean the raw material before milling.
Rotor speed higher than needed
Check whether a lower speed gives the particle size.

Prevention: Hammer life recorded per product.

Screens tearing

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: Screens crack or tear well before their usual life.

Foreign objects in the feed
Improve the magnets and separators ahead of the mill.
Screen not seated in its frame
Fit the screen fully into its frame and clamps.
Hammers too close to the screen
Check the hammer tip clearance.
Screen thickness too low for the product
Use a heavier screen for hard material.

Prevention: Screen condition checked at every change.

Stop the same fault coming back

Recurring hammer mill stops usually trace to a cause you cannot see by hand. The partner we recommend is Fabrico: it tracks OEE and downtime live from PLCs, IoT sensors or AI cameras; where cameras are fitted, the video of a stop sits next to its machine data so the cause can be reviewed; and a technician opens the work order from the stop in the same system. Data is hosted in the AWS EU region, and Fabrico and the company behind it hold ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO 9001.
