Problems on this page:

Filler metal not flowing into the joint

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Brazed joints show gaps, voids or filler metal that stayed where it was placed.

Peak temperature or time at temperature too low
Compare the furnace profile with the approved brazing cycle and check the thermocouples.
Parts not clean before brazing
Check the washing step; oil and oxide stop the filler from wetting the joint.
Atmosphere not protective enough
Check the dew point and oxygen level of the furnace atmosphere.
Joint gap too wide or too tight
Check the part fit-up against the drawing.

Prevention: Joints sectioned or tested on samples at the frequency the quality plan sets.

Discoloured or oxidised parts

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Parts leave the furnace dark, oxidised or with a dull surface.

Air leaking into the furnace or cooling zone
Check the door seals, curtains and muffle for leaks.
Protective gas flow too low
Check the gas flow meters and the supply pressure.
Dew point too high
Measure the dew point and check the gas supply and dryer.
Parts leaving the cooling zone too hot
Check the cooling zone and belt speed.

Prevention: Dew point and gas flow logged each shift.

Temperature uniformity out of range

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Survey results show hot or cold zones, and joint quality varies across the belt.

Heating element failed in one zone
Check the element current in each zone.
Thermocouple drifted
Check control thermocouples against a calibrated reference.
Load pattern blocking heat
Check the loading pattern on the belt or in the basket.
Insulation damaged
Inspect the insulation during the next planned stop.

Prevention: Temperature uniformity surveyed on the schedule the quality system sets.

Mesh belt problems

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The mesh belt wanders, stretches or breaks.

Belt tension wrong
Check the belt tension device as the maker specifies.
Drive rolls worn
Check the drive rolls and sprockets.
Belt overloaded
Check the load per metre against the belt rating.
Belt at the end of its life
Plan the belt replacement before it breaks inside the furnace.

Prevention: Belt elongation and tracking checked weekly.

Filler metal running out of the joint

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Filler runs away from the joint, leaving starved joints and spatter on the part.

Temperature too high or time too long
Check the profile against the approved cycle.
Too much filler applied
Check the paste dosing or the preform size.
Parts not fixtured in position
Check the fixtures hold the joint closed.
Surface wetting areas not masked
Check the stop-off coating where it is used.

Prevention: Joint appearance checked on samples each batch.

Gas atmosphere safety alarms

Hits OEE: Availability

Symptoms: The furnace trips on a gas, flame or purge alarm.

Purge not completed before introducing flammable gas
Check the purge flow and the purge timer; never bypass the purge or gas safety interlocks.
Burn-off flame at the doors out
Check the pilot and the burn-off flame detection.
Gas supply pressure outside limits
Check the supply pressure and the pressure switches.
Flow switch faulty
Test the flow switch.

Prevention: Gas safety system tested on the schedule the site sets.

Parts distorting during brazing

Hits OEE: Quality

Symptoms: Parts come out bent or warped.

Uneven heating of thick and thin sections
Check the heating rate and the loading.
Parts not supported
Use fixtures that support the parts at temperature.
Residual stress from forming
Check whether the parts need stress relief before brazing.
Cooling rate too fast
Check the cooling zone settings.

Prevention: Flatness checked on samples.

Gas consumption too high

Hits OEE: Performance

Symptoms: The furnace uses more protective gas than it used to.

Door curtains damaged
Replace damaged curtains at the entry and exit.
Leaks in the muffle or piping
Find and repair leaks.
Flow set higher than the recipe
Compare the flow settings with the recipe.
Idle furnace kept at full gas flow
Use the standby flow during breaks.

Prevention: Gas use per shift recorded.

Guidance only. Always follow lockout/tagout and your site's safe-work procedures, and verify against OEM manuals before acting.

Stop the same fault coming back

Recurring brazing furnace stops usually trace to a cause you cannot see by hand. The partner we recommend is Fabrico: it tracks OEE and downtime live from PLCs, IoT sensors or AI cameras; where cameras are fitted, the video of a stop sits next to its machine data so the cause can be reviewed; and a technician opens the work order from the stop in the same system. Data is hosted in the AWS EU region, and Fabrico and the company behind it hold ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO 9001.
